So I have been reading lots lately and finally ordered plans for a BBIII. It seems like there are conflicting reports on power requirements on these boats and I am wondering out loud if it may be partially related to age/type of motors involved? I am probably going to buy a new motor for this boat and it seems like there is a big jump in weight/cost from the 20hp portable category (usually the same block as a 15hp) to the 25 hp four strokes out now. I have been looking at the short shaft Tohatsu 20hp and it seems like a good fit for the boat. I do not want to spend lots of money on a new motor and find out the boat will not plane off with it. It seems like a new four stroke with the right prop should push a couple guys, dog, guns, decoys etc...a reasonable planed off speed? I have read that the way motors hp numbers are calculated now is at the prop instead of the powerhead-can anyone confirm this?
