The title says it all, I need to re-finish a tub, was wondering if anyone has used gelcoat or epoxy resin to "re-glaze" a worn finish on a tub. Thanks.

Hi George back in the early 80's I did some side work for a tub refinisher. The "re-glaze" methods for refinishing are ok but will cause problems down the road. If your selling and want to fix it up to look "nice" then its the way to go. If you want to stay inthe house for a while the best bet is a drop in fiberglass insert. We made ours at the time using an old tub and using it to make a mold and shooting product off of the mold. Then we would drop in the insert with adhesive over the old tub and put in new hardware to finish the job. Wore like iron. To demo the insert we put it into a cast iron tub and hit it with a sledge hammer. Broke the tub enamel underneath and did nothing to the insert itself. The insert is the way to go, the only problem is if the company has that tub style mold. hope this helps of course there are new technologies out there so someone may have something better for your application.

Question. When is the last time you or anybody in your house, took a bath? If you can't remember, think about yanking it and putting in a shower only setup. But that generally means ripping everything out to the studs and starting over. I'm in the same situation myself at the moment and trying to figure out the logistics as there is only one bathroom in the house.

If you have to keep the tub, you probably want to hire a refinisher to come in and do it, or do the insert.

I have a way's to go to catch up with you Dave.....hehehe. Stepping over the tub while ducking to not wack my head on the shower door frame is a pain. How come they don't make shower doors 6'8" like regular doors?

Just remember,,,,, if things go per plan,,, you will eventually get there. BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Sheesh Jim, if I didn't have a tub, where would I soak my scuba gear to get all the salt off? Then again, if I didn't have a tub I wouldn't have to clean the soap scum out of it all the time. Hmmmm something to think about. I've been contemplating a bathroom remodel myself.................for four years hahaha.

Thanks to all, I'm really trying to eliminate the hassle of a re-build, everything is good except the tub surface is pretty worn. I really don't care...but I'm married.
I'll look into the Rustoleum product. If it works as good as the paint drip from a molding project that dried on the tub, it should last forever, lol.

Hehe.....at lunch today I went to a "design center" instead of the "home center". I actually looked at vanities that aren't made out of particle board. It's been 2-1/2hrs and my eyes are still burning from the prices.....dang. $600+ for a 24" vanity.....it's a plywood box with 2 doors on it, are you kidding me? NO, the sink is NOT included at that price.
