Took the kids ice fishing this weekend. Never thought we would see this this year. Solid 8" of ice in CT. Just four short weeks ago we fished here in tee shirts and it was 70 degrees!

What it is all about. FLAG!

The big one for the weekend. A 3 1/4lb small mouth that followed a 1 in shorter sister out of the same hole 30 min. apart. First one went back, but this baby hit the scale and then the pan with a pile of perch. Nice fish for an 8 year old to hand line.

Darn near a good candidate for the taxidermist. My folks mounted my first "big one" for Christmas...it was over 4 pounds.

I got out myself on Sat. Incredible action on a private pond in the NW part of the state. We had 12" of ice and I personally burned through 3 doz shiners. I landed at least a bass for every perch I caught (11 perch), although no big ones, there were a number of 2#ers. Also caught 4 pickerel. All Bass and pickerel were sent back down the holes to be caught another day, but I hung on to the perch! Wed is a fish fry at the Farris'.

bait...never seen shiners that color...must be a New England thing....

So now that we've seen the bait show us the fish you caught with them.....

Way to get out with the whole family. I fished on 8'' this weekend but had slow results. Picked up a couple of small bass, perch and pickerel. I hope we get a little snow this week because even with creeprs on I almost fell on my heiney a couple of times this weekend.

My boss is a bass turnament fisherman and I tease him all the time that the bass he's so proud of catching are smaller than the bait we use for these guys. We use hickory shad up to 18" long. Unfortunately when I hook these through the ice they don't come up through the 10" hole very easily :^)

Thanks for the excuse to post a bigger fish pic!

having never cuaght a "perch" of the variety that you showed, and after my single ice fishing endeavor, likely never will, I just couldn't resist posting the "bait" response....

I'll remember the next time that in addition to posting a "witty" reply that I'll get to see a photo of a REAL FISH and post sooner.....

Scott ,

Stop that now !! I love striper fishing and that picture is just a teaser . I to managed to get out on the hard water this past weekend , a little slow but friends of mine caught 2 Northern pike to 18 pounds on the ice . I will be going with them this weekend . I never thought i would be ice fishing this year , be safe out there guys and hook a big one .

Scott, those are some sweet fish you caught. I think winter perch is a close tie with winter flounder. Try to find me a spot to put a few flatties in a bucket and I will show you a meal. Great you got out.
Mike, we had a ball playing hockey and pulling the kids around on sleds. Kills the time like nothing else. Not quite as cold as your Ice Bowl though.
Jay, never thought of mounting it. I guess I could have a glass mount made, but the one I should have done is of the first fish ever. A very cooperative brook trout at my club pond when he was three. That 11 incher put the fever in the kid when it pulled the bobber under eating the meal worm.
Morton, would bet you will be able to chase the pike over your way for quite some time if we get a little snow this week.
Glad you all like Ice Fishing as much as I do. It has made this time of year one of my favorites.

I agree with you that perch are delicious. Yellow Perch that is. Down here we call them Racoon Perch. Having said that there is no way they are as sweet as Flounder. Course the Ocean around here doesn't ice up and seldom does fresh water so I don't know what any fish pulled thru the ice would taste like. Be careful out on that stuff as i see on TV that it will break and drown your butt.

Best,
Hary
