go devil motor

I had to sell my 18ft jon boat do to divorce. Looking to start all over again on duckboat. I want to find motor first.
What is everyones input on godevil long shaft motor. I am on real tight budget.

I have two GDLTS, a 16 HP and a 6.5 HP. I use them to go thru heavily weeded shallow muddy waters. They are unstoppable and very ruggedly built. However you have to accept no reverse (use a pushpole) and no neutral (except for raising the prop out of water). The bigger the motor the more torque effect that you must counteract with the tiller handle. If you run it standing up for steering leverage and visibility use a grab bar or at least a bridle. Always wear your PFD and kill switch lanyard under power. Lots of info on the mmt.com website forum.

Go devil makes a fine motor, very well balanced. Drove one all night (literally) gator hunting ... Was good to go the next day.... Drove another buddy's gatortail for 15 min.... I was absolutely beat

Drive as many as you can in your boat and see what YOU like and what fits your needs. There's been ALOT of favorable press lately on backwaterinc motors.
If i was in the market for a new longtail I would look hard at them.

If you're looking for a rig just for yourself have you considered a copperhead motor? They have been getting good reviews, and are a reasonable priced surface drive

Arlon Gilk is the owner/ designer of Backwater motors. Arlon was formerly with Beavertail.until they sold out. Arlon engineered all of the negative issues of longtails out of his motors. I have an early 90's 16 hp Godevil longtail, it is very well balanced, handles nicely.I have run a couple of others that would plane old beat you up. My old godevil looks identical to the new ones, i guess they got it right the first time. Arlon's backwater motors are quite different and modern looking, definitely longtails for the next mellinium. I agree with Rich, check out Backwater. They are the best longtails going right now, and are actually a bit cheaper than Godevil. Godevil makes a solid motor too, and they have 20+ years of experience behind them, but everyone I've talked to with a Backwater has said they wouldn't trade them for anything else.

I'm running a 7 hp copperhead on a 1236 Lowe Jon, I really like this small rig for the backwaters I hunt.I can launch it with no water and get way back in the marsh with it to ware the birds want to be.but it is a one man and a dog setup.I see your on the shore also,if u like to check it out give me a call 410 507 0467.

Check out PPF mudmotors. A couple of us guys on here have them and weight to hp ratio is great. 59 lbs for a 6.5 hp lightweight, well built unit. www.ppfmudmotors.com

I ran a 9 hp. Honda GD years ago. I have run a 16 hp. GD for the last 6-8 years. I would rather run an outboard motor any day compared to a mud motor, but an outboard won't go where I take my longtail. If I have an inch or two of water and a foot or more of mud, I'm good to go. Bumping and grinding thru stumps and logs in the water, I have no use for a riveted hull. I'm very happy with my welded Go Devil hull with the mud motor.

I'm right around the corner from Chesapeake college off 213 centreville.Let me kno if u want to check it out.My buddy bought a ppf woodduck motor I could probably get my hands on that to.My problem was nobody has these things around here so u can see them so your kind of going in blind.alot of $ to spend and not be satisfied w your purchase.

Yes I have, last spring we built two devlin broadbills. Are you considering building a boat?It is definitely a labor of love ,but very rewarding.I have two boats for sale in the classifieds as I have to many piling up in the yard.
