Been away, but as always, have returned to say Hi. The season started off with nicely, I specifically targeted Atlantic brant for the first half of the season because we won't be able to shoot at them again until January. I went out with a friend, who I introduced to waterfowling last year, and he's already bought a duck boat this past summer (Talk about catching the bug). We met up for the morning shoot and within the first hour had the limit of brant but the cool part is that he doubled on a flock an I shot a single (already had one from a previous flight). In the excitement of his first double and not really paying to close attention as to which bird I shot, he retrieved the birds. As he approaches me he mentions "which bird did I shoot"-- well when a hunting buddy says that the only response one could think of is "the banded one".

Of the three that fell one had a band, we spent the better part of the morning flipping coins to see how we were going to fairly share this wonderful prize--- I lost the coin toss, but here's a picture.

I'm still learning the new system here. Here's the picture. I should mention to you all that before I lost the multiple coin tosses, I had told my buddy that he could keep the band. He wanted nothing to do with charity-- he felt coin tosses were a better solution. The lesson learned - if you hunt with a partener and more than one bird falls make sure you know which one you shot!.

A long time ago a buddy and I had the exact same thing happen. He got the band. Turns out the duck was banded by a controversial local group that releases mallards. At that point it no longer mattered. We were tempted to report the band as being harvested in australia.

I never thought about that. It might have made the longest flight ever, and reported in the Guiness book of duck flight records.

I'm sure it was a federal band, I've never seen local bands around here. In the last few years I've been seeing more banded birds taken in my area, they must be banding more now than in my first 20+ years of hunting.

When discussing the band with my friend, I told him that it's silly to want that band because its a dumb bird. First it's caught in a net and banded, then it gets shot by some knuckle head---- he wasn't convinced. What a way to kick off the season though.

I reading previous post by you, when you were trying to get ready for the season and--LMAO because I had the same issues. I'm still not prepared, my trailer light need fixing, my wader has a hole in it but hell the season came up quick. Fortunately the honey dew list was short this year, and finished 'most' of the line items.
