Goose Banding in South Jersey

Spent 3 days this past week volunteering to capture and band Resident Canada Geese over 5 counties in southern New Jersey. This was my 1st time and I had a great time, learned a lot and met some great people from NJF&W, USF&W and DU biologists. In the 3 days I was there we banded around 600 geese, recorded at least 200 previously banded geese and released around 100 geese (more then they wanted to band at each site). I personally held a double banded goose that had a $50 reward band. Too bad he hangs out next door to a local PD. Hope to help with ducks later this summer.

I was at a DU Flyways meeting a few months ago and met with the NJF&W biologist that runs the banding program. I said I was interested in volunteering, so he gave me the info for their Wildlife Conservation Corps volunteer program. Once that was completed they email me info on upcoming projects.

Just got an email from NJF&W w/ the results from the 2 weeks of banding

2013 Preseason Canada Goose BandingProgram personnel completed preseason banding of Atlantic Flyway Resident Population Canada geese in New Jersey from 18-28 June. A total of 1,570 Canada geese were leg banded including 1,080 adults (513 female; 567 male) and 490 goslings (269 female; 221 male). Captures were made at 37 sites in 14 counties. 843 Canada geese banded in previous years were recaptured. The band distribution was geographically proportional to the distribution of geese observed during the Breeding Waterfowl Survey. An effort was also made to band birds across the various landscape types (i.e.: rural, tidal marsh, suburban, urban) in the state. The banding goal was about 1,350 geese, which represents about 1.5% of the state’s resident population of Canada geese. The banded sample targeted 67% adult geese and 33% goslings as outlined in the Atlantic Flyway Resident Population Canada Goose Management Plan. All banding goals were met. Recoveries of banded geese will provide information on the proportion, timing, distribution and derivation of the Canada goose population (Resident versus Migrant Population) that is harvested during the hunting season. Recapture data from live, previously banded birds, play a critical role in calculating annual survival rates.

That first photo looks a bit familiar to me . I hope you banded a bunch in that spot . lol

Rick,
That's where you think it is. Banded around 70 there. Mark said we wants to come out of there looking like Fred Zink.
