We were celebrating Victoria's birthday in Canada this wekend, and we got out and about for some spring time adventures. I know it is Queen Victoria's birthday we get the day off for, but I prefer to pretend we are paying homage to a more lovely Victoria - Victoria Principal.

anyways ...

Some ditch goats. Can't hunt them there.DSCF8917.jpg

Tried to go fishing in four different lakes on Saturday, but too much ice still. It looks thin, but it is still almost a foot thick.

Bonfire on the beach at Jane's cabin on the lake. LOTS of ducks down there right now - pintails, OS, scoters, GE's, spoonies, mallards, widgies, bbills, and a few cans. Right out there is where the king eider was spotted a couple of springs ago. This pic was snapped at 11 pm, no touching up. I love it when the light comes back.

On Sun me and the kids took a drive over the pass to Skagway to ride the old train just for fun. Lots of snow still. Lots of guys blasting around on snowmobiles too. Maybe we'll take ours out for one last toot before we put them away for the summer?

As soon as you get up and over you get hit by this amazing green. SE Alaska is always a good month ahead of us for spring and way greener. You can smell the black poplar as soon as you see this.

The White Pass RR built during the gold rush of '98 is still running. We hopped a train to ride back up the summit we just drove over. Dave Parks probably remembers when this choo choo was new!

I'd love to have one of these old rail cars as a greenhouse.

We went up, up, up for two hours and then down in one. We can drive up to the same elevation now in about 15 min. No wonder no one rides trains anymore eh? It was great fun though. The kids really liked being able to walk around and talk with their friends, and go outside. We got to go through two tunnels that were blasted out with blackpowder way back when.

Hopefully this weekend we'll be able to get out and fish a bit. We are still kinda looking for a bear too. Saw one on Sun coming back from the train, but he wasn't buggin anybody and it was such a nice warm day it seemed a sin to shoot him. Summer's coming!
