Got the itch...

I'm looking to build a big water boat in the 18-20' range for me and my growing family. I'm looking towards a skiff with an open floor plan, self bailing, center console, lots of freeboard, v-hull, to be powered by something in the 75-90 hp range. I've looked at Tolman skiffs, but have not bought the book. Any other leads? This would be for fishing, clamming, seaducking in New England. For those that don't know I have a devlin snowgoose and I'm looking for a substantially more seaworthy and larger boat in addition to the snowgoose.

There is a design by David Stimson for a west point skiff that is worth looking at. It is strip on plywood frames and has the lines of the Maine skiff. Def. worth a look.

those are good lookin', but I should have said in stitch and glue (or similar), I don't think I want to work on frames.

Tod,

The Tolman is kind of a combination of S&G and frames construction. You start the hull with S&G, put on the chine flats and then flip it over on top of frames to put on the shears. I haven't looked lately but I think even Devlin's larger boats are put together this way. Renn Tolman's book is only about $30 if I remember right and you could build a std, widebody or a jumbo from the same book.

If you find an alternate design post it up. I haven't started the Tolman yet.

I knew you were looking at the tolman. I plan to order the book ASAP. It seems like the tolman woudl do all I would need. I imagine a skiff design would also be fairly easy to modify to get what you want.

Two more - with "internal frames" a lot (just like the tolman) that you may want to look at: The Bartender Boats (http://www.bartenderboats.com/) and the Simmons sea skiff simmonsseaskiff.com. Both can be built of ply, pastrake and strip construction as well as being well known plans. The nicest thing about all the boats mentioned thus far is there have been many built and you would have a wealth of resources on the net for the tough spots. I am partial to the older style of boats/skiffs lines and the tolman is more aligned to the newer style (hard chine glass) in my eyes. Bartender and simmons both have kits and builders that will provide hull build outs for you in case you want to short stop the construciton process.

Tod,
check out this site as well.
Bateau2

They also have some nice plans in the 20 feet and over size. Look at some of the builders posts in their forum area too.

Another possibility?
Good luck.

Todd, you might check out glen-L,com. If you go to customer photos and then customer photo archives, there are numerous detailed pics of the many designs including construction pics.

I have a 19ft hunky dory, commercial work boat that I am now rigging. It is a flat bottom dory, but they have a number of designs with v bottoms.

Wooden Boats Small Boats magazine has both the Tolman and the West Pointer 18. The West Pointer looks a bit like a Novi or an Easton. For what you are thinking of doing, I would go with the Tolman. I am also thinking of building one - just need to find the room to build it! If you go to the Tolman site (I think it is fishyfish.com), check out the various uses and places that Tolman builders/owners take their boats. The Tolman would be great for tuna fishing or sea ducking in the fall. I don't think it requires a lot of HP to push the 20 ft. version either. Easy to trailer too.

I agree with Derek about bateau.com, but I would be looking at the Panga 22. Sounds like we're in the market for the same boat. As soon as I get things in shape at my new digs in the country, I plan to build one myself. I need a boat with beaucoup range, shallow draft, and seaworthy enough to get me to some islands and rigs not too far offshore. Looks like that's the ticket.

Well that's some good news right there. All the boats that I have researched have all shown up on this post. The Tolman is a beauty and it's economical (light) too. I hope you build one, it would be an awesome story to watch.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for designs for a planing hull in that hp range.

From my reading up it looks like the Tolman has the credentials as far as a seaworthyness in a contemporary design, which is what I'm looking for. I'm leaning towards a widebody, that seems closest to my needs.

Derek, You get points for the two most ugly designs possible! I can see where you are coming from, but my eye is definately drawn towards the more modern designs. I'm going to hang a 90 horse 4 stroke off it, no sense going traditional!

Hey Bob, I looked at the bateau boats adn the Jack Tar, it seems like the Jack Tar is an inboard? Lots of offerings from bateau, some pretty sexy designs I have to look at.

Tod,
just showing stuff I have seen on the web. I bought Tolmans book a long time ago and never built one. (before widebody) Was building Brockway copies at the time. Used some of Ren Tolmans ideas. Bateau uses a different style of framing under the deck and a little tweak to hull const. Jack Tar is a "What If" dream boat. So are the Carolina 23/25 hulls. I would look at the C19 and the builders site on bateau. Check out the flats boat builders pages too for ideas. Not better, but just might give you some tricks. The v hull lumberyard hull is a copy of the two above and has some merit too. Good luck.

Read the forum on Batuea 2 .com. The Panga plan they currently have in 20 and 22 are very narrow and tippy, for family and duck hunitng that may be something to consider. It sounds like they are lofting out another 20-22 plan with more beam.
Pangas are known for being long qnd narrow, but from looking at the plan they have the V is very pronounced, a bit contrary to the typical long, narrow and flat V of a traditional panga.

There is another plan through woodenboat called the Nigret that has nice lines and can be built on frames or in S and G.
Derek

I agree that the Panga is not very beamy, I do like the lines though. From the reading I've done since this post, I'm all the more sold on the Tolman designs. I'm still looking though.
