Grits revisited

OK I have now had grits, no mystery why they are called that anymore. Sorry they were quick grits, not instant just quick. I tried them first with butter and syrup, what doesn't taste good that way? Later I tried them with cheese, salt and pepper. Got to say I liked them sweet better then savory. I think I like the taste of corn meal mush better but grits aren't bad. Reminds me a lot of oatmeal.
So the question, what else should I try them with?

Bacon, eggs, bisquits, toast with jelly, milk and orange juice. After all that, you won't miss the grits.

I hear that fish and grits are good.......but I can't stand them nasty things known as grits!

In North Carolina they make a dish called shrimp and grits. The grits I use for that is made with garlic and cheese and is a kind of a casserole. The shrimp you put over it is made with shrimp (of course), sausage, and tasso ham (a spicy Cajun ham). You could substitute country ham for the Tasso and I'd bet you'd still get a pretty good meal.

Here's a link for the shrimp/tasso gravy: http://www.foodnetwork.com/...,00.html?rsrc=search

I just follow the recipe for Garlic Cheese Grits that's on the package of grits. Of course, I increase the amount of cheese and how much Garlic I add.........

Enjoy!

Thank you all,
The garlic cheese grits sounds interesting and with the shrimp and all could be pretty good.
I'm not sure about the red eye gravy, but the ham sounds good.

Dani, I was going to make a joke about your mother probably telling everyone to "Kiss my grits!" but then remembered you probably weren't even born when that show was on. God I feel old now. :-(

TimJ,

Try "creamed eggs" over your grits... Back in my college days in S. Carolina (not far from where Joe O. lives) they served it about 2, 3, or more times a month. Being a Yankee and all, I had never heard of the stuff before... But damn if "creamed eggs on grits" didn't become one of my favorite breakfast items... Oh and it seems to help the flavor some if you find yourself saying, "Youall" at the end of every sentence too.
