Grouse and Woodcock

I am in New Jersey and we usually get some decent woodcock hunting. The grouse hunting is very poor at best. Most guys head to Stokes Forest. Usually walk a day to see one flush....maybe hear one or two.

I would like to meet up with someone in the Pa area or even upstate NY for Grouse hunting. I have a lab and a springer but I'd be more than happy letting you take control with your dog. In the very near future, I'd like to get out to Michigan or Minnesota to see what real Grouse hunting is all about.

Cheers,
Mike

P.S. Not looking to steal anyone's sweet spot either. I'll take your secret to the grave. You can even blindfold me and spin me around in circles.

Mike,

If I still lived in Michigan, I'd accommodate you this year. Now that I'm here in eastern PA, it might be difficult, especially with lack of vacation time left. If you are still looking to go to MI next year, let me know. Might be able to help you make a dream come true.

Did you find yourself a duck boat yet???

Mike,
When you are ready for michigan drop me a line. I own a resort in the western end of the UP and we get grouse hunters from North and South Carolina and other states so we must have some birds around.

Dont wait to long though my place is for sale first person to bring me a bag of money gets it and I get to live in the area and only work one job :)

On second thought you can come up even after I sell it I will still show you around.

I was out in NW Pa near/in Shunk. My brother-in-law's dad has a cabin there with 54 acres. I believe it is near Hunting area #12 (state lands) I was driving down the road (loose gravel) with my son on the quad. Came into a real nice area with a little brook beside the road. I stopped and told my son Kyle that this looks like a home for a Grouse. Went down the road a couple of hundred feet around the bend and there is a Grouse in the middle of the road. It was about 4:30 so I figured that is was getting some grit for the crop. Lighter shade of brown. I only got a gray before up in NH. I could go up there but deer camp is soon and these guys drink a case a beer like nothing that I've ever seen. Don't really feel like being in the company of obliterated drunks.

If something comes up, I might get a cheap flight to Michigan. I can change my schedule at my office a bit and take some vacation time from the hospital.

I did find a sneak that I am probably going to look at this weekend. I don't necessarily need to buy, but the seller needs to sell. So, when he meets my offer, I will be the happy new owner of a true duck rig.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike,

It's been a few years since I've been there, but there is some good grouse hunting in PA just across the river from Stokes State Forest. Take the Dingman's Bridge into PA, head south on Route 209 the entire area is part of the National Park and it is open to hunting. It always produced for us.

Good luck,
Charlie

I grew up in NE PA and hunted grouse and woodcock way back then. Never had a dog but almost always had a flush or two. Nothing better then roasted grouse!
Here are some places:
Prompton Dam Corps of Engineers Property: Located in Prompton along Rt 170 in Wayne Couty. This is where I grew up hunting, fishing & trapping. Good fishing & good deer & small game hunting. The Corps property surrounds the lake, there is more on the east side than the west side, and since it is harder to get too, the east side gets less pressure. Search for Prompton, PA on MSNMaps and it shows up as Prompton State Park. Best way to get to the east side is to take a boat or canoe. The area across from the lake from the boat ramp & to the south gets the least pressure since it is so hard to get too.
State Game Lands. There are state game lands all over Pike, Wayne and Susquehanna Counties. Most have good to great grouse & woodcock hunting. Some get stocked with pheasant. We hunted the ones around Wayne & Susquehanna Counties, mostly around Orsen and Pleasant Mount. Go to the PA Game Commission Web Site & you can find maps of all the Game Lands.
Good luck!

Check out the Poconos as well, around Tannersville, Scots Run, & to the north. There is a pile of game lands & state forests in that area as well.
Most people from NY & NJ go there in the summer and then in winter to ski. Might get a deal on rental in the fall/early winter before ski season/after leaves fall.
And there is a great brew pub in Scot Run (Barley Creek)!
