Guidelines for choosing a boat trailer??

Tod,

I think the Widebody. I haven't started yet but I was thinking along the lines of a Widebody with a center console the first year, see how it handled, etc. Then figure out if I really want a cuddy on it or not. My uses for it will be Great Lakes fishing and as a layout tender so a cabin might be a liability. I never seem to have enough room in my Lund 1775.

The other question is whether to put in a self bailing deck or not.

Widebody would be great if I don't want to gear up for offshore, Jumbo would be sweet for offshore.

For me self bailing for sure, especially without a cabin to deflect waves. If it ever gets really ugly, self bailing and big scuppers will make you real happy.

I like the idea of a cabin, but I doubt that we would do a ton of touring with it. A cabin would be great for overnighters off shore, if we get setup for offshore. Maybe we would do some touring with it, but to be able to fish out of the bow with a CC would be great, since we do a ton of drifting bait. I'm thinking a wheelhouse that I can remove from the CC for hunting if I ever wanted to do that.

I'll be impressed with myself if I start this summer.

thanks for all the info everybody. great info...... tod, go jumbo. stick with the standard 22' length as opposed to stretching it like most do. got the extra stringers with the jumbo which i think could pay off big time for offshore fishing. your getting a much bigger/beefier boat for not much more expense but alot more work too.....

Hey Mark,

You seem to know a scary amount about the Tolmans, you been reading up or do you know someone with one?

tod , ive already been purchasing tools for my jumbo project!! been studying the design for 3yrs now. i know what i want finally and have enough confidence to start. just have to jump into it when the time is right. hopefully start before 09 is over. 22' jumbo, CC, 140 Suzuki. best, mark

Ha Ha you bum! That is great. I've been looking over the plans more closely then when I got the book. I think a Jumbo is in order and I may even go with 22' as you suggest given the space issues with a 24' boat. What fun, a cayuga Tolman rendezvous in 2011 will be in order or maybe Cape Cod Bay for the bluefin bite.

the tuna fishing was a big consideration with this project. spend alot of time out there between what has become the first week of june to duck season! only problem is this class of fish is getting too big for topwater action so we'll have to see what the future holds. the jumbo would be perfect out there. big hull for the afternoon "chop", great gas mileage and a fishing/hunting machine. best, mark

Thanks for bringing up yet another possibility. Now I'm going to have to rethink the whole damned project. Hmmmm a 22' jumbo? It does make sense though.

Yeah 22', I was surprised to read that is the size that Renn designed, since EVERYONE builds a "J24". He just mentioned that it could be streched, but it sure took off. The only reason I'd go with a 24 is if I went with twins for the extra bouyancy.

ive only seen one stretched CC jumbo. all others have been with some sort of cabin or wheelhouse. if i wanted a cabin, i would definitely stretch the hull to 24' to cover the extra weight of a cabin and give more cabin room. in theory it doesnt cost you anymore for the hull because the material is already there and your just not cutting it off like you do with the 22' hull. but, obviously it costs more with epoxy and finishing it off. the extra length also helps with a self draining deck allowing you to raise the deck and sloping it back to the stern to solve the problem of having water get trapped at the cabin sole. i love this boat! best, mark
