harvested a bird

just proud to announce i did get a bird before the year end. A young brant came by out of our new floater about the 40 yard mark (which is the absolute limit of my skill level) and those 3 1/2's didn't let me down it kept flying after the shot as i watched wondering why it didn't fall and then it fell stone dead. Now the bad to the story so i gave it to my buddy to smoke it and i got a call expecting a dinner invite he informed me a stray cat got it. what a waste i just have to tell myself it was a hungry cat i guess...... in case you are wondering i ate pizza for dinner.

Good thing the cat got it.. ur better off with the pizza unless u got anchovies on it, then u know what the brant would've taste like...hehe

brant is the most nasty tasting thing in the world. I don't even shoot em. I shot one years back and I cut it open and that was enough for me they smell like bay mud at low tide and taste like mud too. They are good as dog trainers. The pizza was a better choice.

Best recipe I heard was you do not pluck the bird, but nail its feet to a board and put the board in cold water so that the duck is upside down. Leave it this way outside for a couple of days to "age" the bird. Pull it out, take the duck off the board and throw it away, eat the board.

Brant is a very good table bird-until it starts eating the lettuce. If you can find them eating eel grass they are excellent. Problem is there isn't enough eel grass around to feed them. But you can still eat them, you just have to brine them first and then cut the meat off and cook it in a pan. Don't roast them in the oven.

I've heard all the horror stories of brant. i had brant prepared by a backyard chef and loved it. I'm picky when it comes to taste but he said early season its good he cooked scoter with it believe it or not and not bad at all but he don't give up recipes but loves to cook for you. so i wanted to try to smoke one but you heard the story maybe if i can get another soon enough we can give another attempt.

Mike,
Let me know if you want to tag along one day. I'll put you on the Brant so you can give it another try.

John we will have to meet up some day just from the short time we talked at the duck boat show i can tell your stories will make the lack of birds go by fast. LI Jack will be back soon maybe we can get together in january if you had time. i will be limited to weekends unfortunately.

Thanks for the laugh DC. You had me right up till the end. I've had similar experiences with the Brant. Opened them up and let the stench begin. Wouldn't even feed it to the dog in fear of a farting revenge later. Haven't shot one in a few years since I won't eat them. I have heard that the ones that are eating the eel grass are much better though.

The ones here only eat the lettuce, even though there is Eel grass available.
If they got a green a$$, your in for some memorable eats.

I don't have a brant/cat story, but I shot a hen hooded merg by mistake, thinking it was a wood duck in the poor light. I felt obligated to eat the damn thing so I prepared it with some wood ducks and put them in the oven. Went to run some errands and when I got home the whole place stunk. I took a small bite of the merg and it was evil nasty. I let it cool down and took it outside and called the my tomcat who would eat anything. He ran over, sniffed the merg, and ran off.
