Went out for our own special kind of family egg hunt...

Snowgoose easily handled the breaking 3-4 footers on the way, here it is barely holding anchor...

I wish I had waders as a kid....

The haul at the end of the day - a bushel of hard clams, two buckets (both with bails!), a snow shovel and a nice deck chair. Pretty kickass way to spend the day.

Nice, looks like a fun day. I have never clammed here but i did it up in mass as a kid every summer. I like the boat too

You find those slip on shoes too?

I wish I could find some nice ones like that - I need new ones. The leather is worn through in places, but I have a couple sets of insoles in there so my feet don't get wet even when it is pretty wet out. The other day I accidently wore them to an appointment with my Doctor.

Lotsa pretty birds out today.

As much as you like your eats, you should get into it - good stuff.

I will say that taking a second look at the picture, I found that hat on an island a few years back.

Looks like you guys had a great day!

I know what you mean about the "kids waders". I spent an aweful lot of time in and/or near the water while groing up. I was always wet.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing.

I am gonna have to learn how to do a little "Clamming".

Of all of the time we spend on the East Coast, I've done about everything else. I (or we), have gathered a bunch of Oysters, caught a lot of Blue Crabs, caught quite a few fish, shot a mess of Ducks, Brant and Geese but we've never dug for Clams.

I think I'll have to look up the instructions so when we head out that way a little later this year, we'll know how to do it. We're going to have three young, very energetic, adventerous and willing kids with us who aren't afraid to work hard or get dirty. Might be fun!

Hardest thing about clamming is finding the spots and understanding the rules... The actual clamming is a nice mix of honest work and good fun. Winter clamming is my favorite - no one else around and the water is nice and clear.

Very nice! And the correct time of year to be doing such activities ;)

Gus is growing like a weed!

Gus is gettign big - looking at the pics makes him look bigger to me. First thing he did was fall down, literally 4 or 5 seconds out of the boat and he was floating. New shirt and jacket and he was back in business.

Heck, as a retiree I was going to say all those were pretty formal looking wardrobe items. Nowdays, I might wear an outfit like that to the symphony!

Looks like fun. Glad you have the proper watercraft for the rough conditions.

Tod looks like a great day!

How do you cook the clams and how are they to eat??

Fred

Thanks Fred, I've been enjoying your elk pics, but trying hard not to look too close so I don't get any ideas :). Those clams eat great. The little ones can be eaten raw or just steamed open (pic below) and anything that is too big to eat that way is steamed open, run through the grinder and frozen in their broth for use in stuff like chowder or clam pasta. They also make awesome clam cakes - which is Gus' favorite. Both ground clams and clam cakes freeze great, even over a year in the deep freeze, they are perfect when you pull them out.

Gus can't really dig these clams because they are always too deep, but yesterday we held him and helped him work the rake and he got 3 clams. Of the three he got, he said he wanted to make clam chowder our of one, clam pasta out of one and a clam cake out of his third. He seemed to be absent when Jen and I were on the deck scrubbing clams though :).

It was a white knuckle ride, but we got there safe. No amount of extreme weather can keep us off our shellfish :).

On another note: I was able to till a couple strips for Jen on Saturday and she got peas in after we got home yesterday. It has been wet, but we got just the right window.

Great pictures. Seems not long ago that boy was toddling around in pictures of your desert camp.

You aren't kidding. They do get big fast - seems to be in spurts. I bet your oldest has to be close to driving age! :).
