Heaters in boats to warm your dog, opinions wanted

Me and Alex run a big "dogburner" 2 element propane burner on top of a 5 gal propane tank, and I also have a Mr Buddy heater with the 1 litre canisters of propane.

Since his bloodline is more border collie than waterfowl dog, he gets cold, and sitting in a cold aluminum boat must be even worse.

I also like the setup, because i have been known to do an impromptu sleep over, and some night, it just might be on a sandbar without any driftwood for a fire.

I lay a wool blanket below the dog, and if it gets really bad and we are not near the heaters (when hunting the shore) I take a thick Olive wool wwII Naval P coat, and that works well as a wind shield.

Oh,
We call it the "dogburner" because Alex will turn around in front of it and it always seems to singe his long feathery tail.

I have a custom built 14' - 2 man BBSB fiberglass over wood. The cockpit is 50" long X 45" wide.
This was really the first time I was concerned about getting Mocha warmed up. She has an Avery vest and also blankets. It was just that the water temp was around 36 degrees and air temp was in the teens. Just not a good day for a long cold swim. On most days like that I don't let her go in for to long or at all. Should have been an easy retrieve and just a trot to pick up the bird. The chase started out on a sandbar in 6" of water and quickly went to a long swimming chase in 8' of water with an outgoing tide.

I'm picking up the heater tomorrow and I'm sure all will be fine in the future. I have also spent many a night out in the cold and I would not buy the heater for my self but my best friend could have really used it this past weekend. After all, I think she earned it now.

Thanks for the feedback

If you are getting the Mr BuDDY heater, always take 2 cans, because as the can releases gas, it cools, and the output grows anemic.

With a 2nd can,
you can swap em out and place the original can near the heat to take the frost off of it, and raise te internal pressure enough so it will spit out the fire when you need it.

Todd,

Thanks for the tip. I ended up getting it from Lowes for $59. They had them on clearance.
