I am trying to learn to use a goose call and it is not going very well. I bought one of the kits at bass pro, a primos honky tonk short reed. I cannot make it sound like the instructional video or my resident canada geese. I have been told a flute is easier to use and learn on, is this true? I can use a duck call and pretty good with speck call. Help.....advise on flute brand and is it really easier to blow. I am ready to give this call to my 13wk old lab and let him eat it.

I had success with the Honker Talk video.

Practice is your only solution. I am sure the call is fine. You likely need more practice with air presentation and back pressure control. They are nothing like a duck call. You need bursts of high velocity air. Velocity is the key. You can put a lot of air through it, but if it is moving to slow, it will sound like a party horn. Not a good one either.

Just keep at it and practice for a couple of weeks.

I have been trying for a long time to blow a short reed and just cant. I always fall back to my flute calls. production calls I like the big river calls the shorter one. just me I made my own a few years back and like how it performs so i stuck with it. I can make some abnormal sounds out of it and it works for the one or 2 geese a year we get out on the diver rig lol. Best of luck dont give up!

I have a Foiles short reed that I can blow well enough to hunt. I just recently bought an Eastern Shoreman flute. For me, the flute is much easier to run and sounds much "goosier" on the low end.

I started with a flute, but now I can't run one after moving to a short reed. Stick with the call you have. It just takes practices like anything else.

Also most videos neglect mentioning mouth cavity size. It helps to reduce the size of your mouth cavity by raising the back of your tongue. This will restrict the air and make a hissing sound without the call.

I can get the Eastern Shore man to sound goosier more often then the others which were hit or miss, a lot of miss's, lol
Also the DVD "Bad Grammer" is good to show you what real geese do and why, even though the call showcased is ,I believe, a Tim Grounds.

I'm no goose caller either, but I wanted something easy to use when that flight of geese happened to be passing by. Since I blow Carlson duck calls I thought I would give their goose call a try. I got their classic locust/bois d'arc wood call and came with an instructional cassette tape. It was no time till I was making goosey sounds. On opening day last season 3 Canadas were flying by and I managed to call them in. We killed 2 of the 3 which really made our day because that was the first Canada my son had ever shot! We're planning on setting our sites on some more Canadas this year.
