Helping Eiders, not a duck box but close.

Good article. Do you know if they are doing anything to curb the cormorant numbers? I'd love to help by trapping mink and otters[smile]

I read something USFWS about them considering a hunt on cormorants. Not sure if it would be recreational or a controlled hunt. I believe it was going to public comment before the virus happened.

I haven't seen anything for Maine in regards to that. Would be a lot of carnage if they did, not that I disagree.

Structures kind of remind me of what we use to do for rabbit/quail nesting structures years ago. Leaning loads of brush /limbs against a fallen tree or backstop to hopefully provide a secure nesting structure for those 2 . Worked to an extent but the animals that preyed on them soon learned to watch the door to the dinner table so to speak. Extended habitat is usually the cure . I guess that's out of the question in the eiders chosen nesting areas.

That's a great article and very interesting. Predation and loss of habititat seem to be the biggest issues, and the loss of habitat due to the cormorant population could be easily controlled. They are hunted in Scandinavia and are said to be good eating. I think the cormorant hunting issue is more social as far as the acceptability than it is anything else, kind of like mourning doves in NJ.

TROY, I CAN REMEMBER THE FEDS ASK ME & AFEW OTHER HUNTERS AFTER THE SEASON CLOSED GAVE US A SPECIAL PERMIT TO GO OUT & HARVEST A DOZEN CORMARANTS FOR STUDY ,BUT THEY FORGET ABOUT INFORMING LOCAL POLICE DEPT .SO WHEN WE GOT BACK TO THE RAMP WHERE WE LAUNCH FROM THEY CAME DOWN ON US LIKE BEES TO HONEY .
