Hey Lee...............Re: Ruger .375

As things always seem to turn out around here, I was down at the pond today planting 60 starts of high-bred poplars around the edge of the pond when I hear a truck coming up the drive to the house.

I got on the ATV and when I got over to the house I saw it was C.P. Donnelly the gun maker from down the road. He wanted me to unlock the Missouri Flat Cemetary across the road so he could buzz up some of the dead trees & limbs that I had a tree trimmer cut down this motning.

I jumped back on the ATV and went down to the cemetary and let him in. I asked him what he knew about Ruger's new .375 and he said he had not shot one yet, but was of the opinion that it will be very popular with the big bore fans in the future. He said it has already had great results in Africa on everything including one shot kills on Cape Buffalo.

By the time we had his truck loaded with firewood, we had pretty much come to the conclusion that he will build me one if I come up with an action. He said he'd even come to Montana to shoot Rogue Prairie Dogs with one!

We also talked ourselves into going to Fort Rock in a couple of weeks to shoot Sage Rats for a couple of days with our varmint rifles. Donnelly has about 8 years on me, so I think I could keep up with him.

Now to find a suitable action....like an old Model 70!

It uses an 06 length action doesn't it? I'd pick up a Ruger 77 in 30-06 and have it reworked ..probably easier to find and cheaper than an old mod70 action only. Didn't happen to ask about reaming a chamber throat did ya?

By the time you had to pay shipping both ways on your gun, plus whatever reaming would come to, would be more than getting it done locally.

I looked at some 77/06's last nite, the start at about $350+shipping & registration. I think I'll see what I can find at the loacal gun shows, somebody always has an '06 that needs some TLC.

Ruger wants $1,098.for the new .375. I should be able to make one for under $600 including the new barrel by Donnelly.

Watch the newspaper too. What size case head is the 375 Ruger? You might have to get a magnum bolt face. I may rent a throat reamer and do it myself on the 358 Hawk. I found a couple places on line that rent reamers.
