These guns are for upland bird shooting, not goose hunting from a pit blaind where you can have a heavy gun. I have always shot better with shorter guns. I have a 24" barrel on my 870 and it kills geese and ducks for me better than along barrel, even when pass shooting geese. My best dove shooting has been with an 18" riot barrel on my 870's. It's like throwing a blanket over them. BTW the doves are showing up here already for the pond water and as soon as this winter wheat dry's up they will have more food than they'll know what to do with.
You know John Wayne carried a 4-3/4" Colt S.A. instead of one of those gay looking Buntlines. With todays powders, a shotshells load is bunrnt up within the first 18" of a barrel. Some people may need to concentrate on their swing and follow through. I just snap-shoot birds if they are in range and don't have to carry all that extra weight around. Instead of swinging and following through, I have always picked a spot in front of a birds (depending on it's speed and distance) and let it run into my shot string. It's the same pricipal as the way Tom Knapp shoots 9 clays before they hit the ground, he sure the hell don't have time to think about leading them and his follow through, he's picking a spot where the bird will be when his shot reachs that point! :^)
As for you Joe, I'll have you know that my Grandfather got married to a 16 year-old when he was 95.....................he had to! :^)
