Hey Pete, the pig might have to wait

I-40 shut down from Albuquerque to the Texas border. I know some of this snow has drifted in our courtyard but here is what it looks like. This morning I let Serrano and Jalapeno out to go to the bathroom. I had to pull Jali out because she did not want to get out there. Here is something to think about. We live on old Hwy. #1. Everyone knows that no roads are plowed on weekends. They have signs up saying that. This is going to be interesting. If I drove down the hill from our house there is no way I would get back up.

The good news is that the pups are getting bigger and all look healthy. On Saturday the vet opened his office so I could bring the litter down to have their dewclaws removed. That was way beyond a nice gesture. Bev and I are fortunate.

Puppies AND snow. Al you must have been really good this year for Santa to be this nice to you!

Well, thanks, Carl regarding the puppies. I recall easily why I wanted to leave Wisconsin for New Mexico---Lack of snow!

I-40 has been shut down for some time from ABQ to the Texas border. The last weather report was about the 4 foot to 10 foot drifts being encountered by the highway crews.

This all means that most likely we will be seeing an all out effort once this storm passes with the National Guard dropping bales of hay to the thousands of cattle stranded on the ranches, starving to death.

It is still snowing here and from the looks of this storm, my duck season is over. There will be no way to get to my hunting areas. If the snow melts which it might in the next two weeks, then the mud will be worse than the snow.

This storm is a game changer! I hope everyone is safe but I do worry about the critters out there.

Jali is now beginning to build a nest in the Whelping Box. I straighten out the carpet and she makes the nest. It won't be long now until there is a litter of Chocolate puppies in the house. I'll keep you posted. Busy times here.

I hear you loud and clear Al. Been following the reports, and have all the state's road conditions bookmarked. This map was relatively clear yesterday. http://nmroads.com/ If I need anymore convincing I just go to the traffic cams. Nasty roads from Nebraska south to the Mexican boarder. We're going to get hit tomorrow but nothing as severe as you got.

I have two sets of old snowshoes I can send:-). We are sitting here in Wisconsin bare of that white stuff. One snow fall all this year but I'm sure that will change. We'll talk of this year for years to come for the weather and the lack of ducks North. By New Years eve that should be gone for you. Gotta love all your pups! Happy New Year.

You are right about talking about this one for years to come,Jim. It will be interesting where this snow belt heads for. I just took these three pictures 20 minutes ago at around 9:45 AM.

Jim,

Kinda wishin you were getting snow. We're experiencing our spring flood levels now from all the rain up north. Fortunately we crested yesterday but it's only a matter of time until the next big rain. I just received a winter weather warning for the next 24 hours as I was typing this calling for up to 1/2" of ice then 3" to 8" of snow on top of the ice. Oh boy!

We should swap pictures al. Less than 2"'s up here. They are saying 6-8 between now and Tuesday. This would be the fist snowfall of the year.

Have still not put on a winter coat, just my old ice hockey coaches jacket which isn't much. Suppose to get into single digits temp wise this evening I believe.

Was at Gander Mountain yesterday where a lady was returning bunch of ice fishing stuff. Said her husband wanted to get into it so she bought him the gear to give it a shot. Since we still don't have much ice to speak of, and not many lakes frozen enough to walk on, he told he would maybe give it a go next year and to take the stuff back.

Weird year. Enjoy the snow and memories of Wisconsin.

Xmas day it was 56-58 midday, had to open the doors and windows.
Went to the blind early this morning [730],met up with Chris my nephew and his buddy. Geese fly later in the day here. Foggy as heck and very little wind, could hear the geese, but had to keep a good eye out for ducks.
Ended the morning with 5 canadas and some good stories...

Checking the weather reports sounds like it's pretty bad out there. Al, you still have power??

Well, Carl, if you are talking about electricity, YES! We ended up with a good 15 inches of snow and this morning at 6:30AM it was 6F. It is supposed to cold here all week with highs maybe around 34F I just got back in from feeding the big dogs in the kennel and they are looking just fine. They all got and extra scoop of food.

As for me I am on my reserve tank. Serrano has her 11 pups in the office which are 5 days old now, on the south side of the room and on the north side, Jali , just gave birth to her 7th chocolate this morning which was at 7:59. I think she is done and all of them are doing well. I know mom is exhausted. This was her first litter. So now there are 18 pups and two moms to keep me company when I am in the office!
This is called "Busy Times"!

Hahaha, you must be a tired guy right about now. Were you up all night?

We're getting hit with freezing rain/sleet right now with more on the way the rest of the day and night. Time will tell how much but so far forecast is 2-6" and lingering snow showers into tomorrow.

Now if you had some roosters to bust out of cattails down there it would be just like back home in western MN. :)

I hope it doesn't stick around too long down there. I've been hearing good things about how quail have been making a comeback all over the SW. I'd hate to see a huge storm like this wipe out a big area.

BTW the pups look awesome. I'm starting to have puppy fever so I'm not sure if those photos are helpful.

Stay warm,
Tim

At one time in my life I could handle going a night without sleep. Now it is impossible. Boy that nap felt good. Yesterday afternoon around 1:00 Enchanted Desert Jalapeno aka Jali, started panting and nest building. Both great signs that she was about to have pups. It went on and on. Poor thing. First time for her to have pups. So after a night in the office she finally started this morning at 5:15. A chocolate female was first born. At 8:19AM, #8, another chocolate female was born and that was it.

She is doing a nice job for a first time mom. That makes us lucky.

I'm hoping to watch Monday Night Football but am betting I don't make it to half time.

I have appreciated the responses and hope to answer them in the near future.

Bev told me that it was snowing in Wausau yesterday. Are you into the snow belt now also? Sure glad you decided to wait a bit.

Hey Mark, maybe there is a new batch there by now. I hope your wish comes true. As for me, it got up to 29F yesterday and the sun was still able to melt some of the snow. I did the Toyota leap when I saw that. I can tell you that there are many fond memories of Wisconsin. The best one of all was when Bev and I had our first date in 1996. We went out for a Friday night fish fry up in the Wabeno area. Her house was 76 miles from mine and there was a slight chill in the air that first week of February. My thermometer was reading -45F. Well, I was driving a 93 Dodge cab and a half dually with a Cummins in it. It was filled up with #1 diesel and I made sure there were additives also. I loved that truck because it got me up there and back. Still wished I had it.

Rich, maybe you will be getting some snow now. This seems to be a fast moving storm. Congrats on the geese and hopefully you got some ducks. Glad someone is.
