just got a note from Jason Russell who, with his son Grayson is at the show.....Jason was in the decoy head carving contest and stabbed himself in the thigh with his knife, (I asked him f he had put my name on the entry form), and severed an artery....nice arc of blood....lots of attention....trip to the ER....stitches......and a hole in is good jeans.......Good news was he won MOST POPULAR in the Head Carving contest......I tell ya some carvers will do anything for a ribbon.....

Stay tuned...no tellin what will happen when they judge the decoys tomorrow...

Steve

Glad he is OK. I didn't see it happen, but I have seen smaller blood trails on a double lunged deer than he left. ....

The boy does have a "feel for the dramatic"........he tool Grayson there to "watch Dad and learn"......that's a scary thought isn't it?.....

I heard you had some "drama" of your own Kevin.....something along the lines of "alcohol was involved"?.....you could at least show us what the item was.....

Kevin-

That's a very nice lookin turkey.

Jason sure knows how to have fun. Glad he's ok though.

OH MAN.......I'm glad I wasn't there....cause one of our wives would be even more annoyed.....and there might well have been more blood spilled.......
NICEEEEEE.....thanks for posting that..

Steve

Jon, I could tell that it was TINY from the pictures....Years ago I did the same thing that he just did on a little King Rail no bigger than his bird...wish I had a picture of it to post but its in Florida and I'm not......love the little stuff.......

I am a turkey addict. I walked through the hall with the auction items and said...that has to be mine. I went and got my card and waited.

It was a popular item. It was the first thing to really have competition.

When I was young I used to collect little animal figurines.

This little gobbler is so detailed it even has spurs. I can't fathom how the carver made it.

It had won an honorable mention ribbon and the carver let me have the ribbon too.

It was pricy, but only because the competition for it was stiff. but the money goes to a good cause for a good group of folks to help put on this show.

Having sobered up this morning I still have zero regrets.

Now to find a little glass dome or something to put him in.

Well now he has a good story to tell, with a scar to prove it. All part of being a Decoy Carver. I bet the hotel staff was pretty impressed...

Kevin...I've been looking, though admittedly not all that hard, for a little glass dome thingy for my little Rail....if you find one please post it....if I find one I'll do the same....

Would love t see a low level close up of your little Tom...

Steve

I will Steve.

I am kind of thinking of a large snow globe or something like that.

Or a shadow box with a scene in the back.

the shadow box idea is a neat one.....something subtle so that it doesn't detract from the carving....like that idea a lot....gonna have to work on that when I get back to Florida.....thanks for the idea...

PAul...thanks......a day ago this would have done the trick.....now I'm really liking the shadow box idea.....

Will keep this link on file in case that doesn't work out....

Thanks again....

Paul, that site has everything a man could want for this kind of setup! I am going to have to look hard at these as it would be a simpler option!

Steve,

Back in the day I used to mess with miniatures as a hobby. I would make simple diaramas for pieces. A little dry moss for grass, a few pebbles for bolders, twigs for logs, etc. I'm thinking a very basic forest floor that does not draw the eye and maybe a muted backdrop of a forest scene light in color so that it does not turn to dark as a shadow box can. Something similar to oil on canvas effect.

Nowadays it would be easy to do with some of the photo finishing options. Slightly blurred.

A shorebird in some clay with sand sprinkled on glue with a blue ocean background would be pretty easy, or even no background would be elegant. Hope you drop a picture of the bird when you get back to it.

If your bird was gobbling I have a photo that would be PERFECT for it.....for one feeding like yours I'm thinking a pasture and more sky than the pictures I'd use for a gobbling bird....
Rails are marsh birds and I think I've got a picture for that that will work perfect......
I've got a little Pheasant that I'll do it this works out....he's standing and a neat background with a flying bird way in the back I think will be neat....
OH and a Stefane Bougie hen Harlequin, bigger than the smaller ones but still a miniature, that is going to have to be done......now where did I put that extra wall?.....

I found my self waxing poetic over deer seasons gone by, and how I do love to follow a good blood trail. Best part was when I stationed myself in the concourse restroom and kept yelling, " BUT THERE ARE NO MORE TAMPONS, NOW WHAT DO WE DO" !? Regards, B
