HIN Number marking

I have an older fiberglass Merrymeeting Bay Scull. It does not have a HIN, so the state given me a HIN. Now I need to put in on the boat. Can I brand fiberglass? is there another way of marking it that is permanent? I could always have a couple of brass plates but they would seem to easy to remove.

Options? Thoughts?

Use a dremel and etch the number into the glass. That is how we do all our production boats.

I have a '58 Aerocraft that also did not have a HIN. I purchased a piece of 3/4" x .125 aluminum and hammered the numbers into it. Then just riveted it onto the boat. Looked professional and was easy to read.

I go to Walmart and go to the dog tag engraving machine to make tags for the boats that I have built. Remember that the boat has to have 2 tags to be CG compliant. The tag has one hole in the end so I drill the other end and then screw it to the hull. Cheap and very easy.

David,
Like Terry said, stamp your own our of aluminum from Home Depot or similar place and rivet it on.
Holler if you need help with that.
There were only 3 manufacturers of fiberglass MerryMeetingBay Scullers that I know of. Any idea who made it? Any pictures?

Like Tom H. I use the dog tag engraving machines. I've also used local trophy vendors like the ones that advertise little league, bowling and such. The Four Rivers I picked up this year had the tag ripped off. I called Four Rivers and emailed them a photo copy of my title and they sent me a new tag and two rivets to attach at no cost.

The numbers are no to be easily removable, or readily visable if they have been removed or tampered with. This wednesday we are launching a 72 foot sportfisherman we built , guess what I was dremmeling into a corner of the transom this afternoon? You guessed it our HIN number. Rich

The gentleman that I bought my boat from represented that it was made by "Todd". According to the mold were subsequently sold to TDB Co. I do not have any picture but when the season is over and I remove the grass I can take some. It does have the raised V across the bow deck That the TDB scull appear to have. Brass or aluminum tags will b easy. But it also seems easy to remove. I guess I can drop the shelf I made between the two cockpits and mount the second one there. It is unlikely thief would find it.

David,
Since the Todd Boat has become part of TDB, I'd get ahold of the owner and see what he can do for you.

I know own the TDB and I would inscribe the HIN with a dremel as I stated previously. This will be permanant unless someone wants to gouge the boat to remove it. A second HIN should be present inside the boat somewhere but good luck. THe sculler we got with the company i never found a second HIN on. IF you already have a replacement HIN simpke scribe it on the transom right top side and your set.

I wouldnt use a tag thats screwed or rivited because those are to easy to remove.

If I cut one in with a dremel does anything need to be done to seal the area? I will paint over it but should a apply a layer of resin first. I would think the resin would seal it the best but tend to fill in the letters.

David, no basically just scratch through the gelcoat. doesnt have to be deep at all. just enough to etch the number into the hull. Simple, cheap and works.
