I have a Hoefgen Canoe that has some problems. It is Kevlar w/ Gel-Coat on the bottom. The Gel-Coat is cracking badly. Some small spider web patterns & some lengthwise cracks.

How can I repair any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. PS The boat doesn't leak at this point.

get rid of the POS right now before it kills you....get it far away from you...like Washington away from you...Heck I'd hate to see anyone get hurt in it and being the humanitaroan that I am I'd pay the frieght on it to get it ar away from you so that it won't hurt you.....

You can thnak me later...for now just spend your time getting it ready to ship...

I see that you have your tongue crammed deeply into your cheek. I always new that you did have a very large heart, filled with compassion!

If I give it away I will have to find another person as I know that you already have one among your VERY large fleet of Duckboats.

thats why having tghe Heofgen here would be no problem...since I have other boats I'd have no need to use it and it therefore, would never be in a postion to have a catastrophic failure, shedding its resin from the kevlar, throwing you into the water and leaving your wife without your weekly paycheck...

My Lord man if you don't do it to save yourself do it for your wife, she needs you....and your check....

I'm afraid to send this vessel to WA. It has never been piloted by one so skilled in verbal jousting!

Also I hear that Bellingham has polluted water from all the Liberal Kyakers in the Hood Canal.

This Canoe has never been exposed to the sight of floating debree consisting of discarded "Starbuck's" cups and old copies of Al Gores" Earth in a Lurch".

I guess I'll just keep it and forget the minor damage to the bottom. It doesn't show anyway.

You could send it to me in Michigan...where everything is cracked and broken. I don't think those spider cracks are a problem and may just be topical...you could try some buffing compound to see if they disappear.

Glad to see that one of the "Sage" veterans of boat building is still mentally funtional!

I don't think it is a real problem. The boat is quite old and hasn't liked the intense "Skin Cancer" climate of the New Mexico summmers. I keep it in the shade but even here at 8000 ft elevation the air gets pretty warm in the summer,

The Kevlar is very flexible below the waterline. This is where all of the cracks are. As I stated in my original post the boat doesn't leak and probably nothing but cosmetic.

The spider cracks will pose no problem unless the boat is always sitting in the water. Cracks lead to exposed fiber which then acts as a wicking agent bringing water under the resin and causing blistering. Blistering is a problem and will lead to composite failure. As your boat is not in the water long enough for this to happen, I don't see a problem. Also, the Kevlar Hoefgen is much more flexible than the fiberglass model and more prone to resin crack. If these cracks really bother you, I'll swap my spider crack free Hoefgen for you problematic spider crack infested kevlar boat. That's the kind of guy I am.

I was waiting for a reply that would solve the problem besides giveing the boat away. The Lou Tisch's of the world. Question ? Could one paint over with gelcoat? I have never worked with gelcoat. Maybe it's only a question of cosmetics. Of course if the canoe is going to be given away out of concern for safety. I will pick it up and despose of it properly.(; )
 

Why not use it aa a drone with a Coot in full flight mounted above the gunnels and pull it with one of thoes awful SeaDoos and we could get some good shooting on fast movers.Trouble getting a Seadoo driver.Maybe a guy doing life in Gitmo.If he survives,he goes free.
