Hooks/clips for removable weights

For thise that detatch the weights from the decoys for storage, what are you using for clips? I am thinking of some Fastex plastic clips. I would like to be able to handle them with gloves or at least numb fingers!

TIA, Dave

Just a few observations....

1) Storing weights separately is a royal PITA.
2) Slotted decoy bags with weight pockets are the cat's meow.
3) Plastic clips hate cold WX.

If you go with clips, I'd go with the longline clips from atagulf.com. Just order in bulk. Their shipping charges stink.

Here's what I use:

I basically use the type of clips that Rex suggested. I buy them from my local fishing store. I usually don't hunt with a lot of decoys and therefore do not need a lot of weights. Just switch them between decoys when needed. I wanted to get the L shaped weight with the stretch cords but didn 't feel that it was necessary to spend another $50 when my system is working for me so far.

Dave,
how many decoys? I have a bag of small cod longline clips like the ones pictured with the swivel. I got them from a local longliner. If you need some I can send them your way. I dont know the count but its over 30 I think.

You tie a loop of string to the decoys and use the clip on the end of the line from the weight.
Or for strings you tie the snap on a dropper to pick up the mainline.

I think you should take up Bob on his offer! I like the smaller longline clips for single
line use. I got turned on to them by a guide in Maine. Some I have attached to anchors
with a couple inches of line on them. The decoys have about 5 feet of line with just a knot on the
anchor end. Just grab a weight and clip on at desired depth. I use the big clips on longline
blocks. Don't buy the clips from Greanhead Gear they are very poor quality and must be bent
to hold properly!! Hope the ducks show up SOON!! John

Thanks for the input guys. I did send Bob a note, I'll try the clips, I am sure from the feedback here, they will work well. Now the next question, how do you store the weights? I am fitting out my sneakbox, I have placed the gas tank in the bow on the port side next to the daggerboard trunk, I am thinking a low wooden box/tray along the starboard side of the trunk would balance nicely. I am thinking a rubberband on the clip will allow me to eliminate tangles in the box?

I make my weights in a texas sized muffin pan. They weigh about 31/2 pounds or slightly more, with a copper loop molded in.to this I tie a loop of long line.I attach the weight to the longline with a snap bolt w/swivel (dog leash type.Weights are stored in a shallow feed pan and longlines are coiled in a larger feed pan.Decoys are on 3' droppers with a longline clip on the end.Bagged decoys.(divers)

Get your cips from a commercial fishing supply house Atlantic and Gulf as previously mentioned or SNL corp. 1-800-330-3087 They,re bothe the same price . Keep away from any of the duck hunting retailes, Knutsons, Cabellas Etc. They're twice the price.

I'll second the motion for using longline clips. Easy with gloves and you can change up your rig quickly.
Here is how I set my decoys up with the 5" longline clips 4/0 swivels and from Atlantic and Gulf fishing supply

I then use 48" 400 lb. test monofilament drop lines from SNL

attached the decoy and the other end to the swivel on the clip.

These clips will hold 1/4" -3 strand line very well. I get a 600' roll of white 1/4" line for around $35, I cut to a variety of lengths, dye it black, then set a 5 lb Danforth anchor on the front of the line and a 2 or 3 lb weight on the back end. You can get away with less weight but we hunt in water that has some swift currents at times and the Danforth can hold the boat while you clip the decoys to the same line. I use a longer drop line so the dog can swim through the decoys and you can also run the boat over the line with out catching the line on your propeller.

I have a mix of around 75 decoys set up this way. I keep them on smaller loops for transport and storage and have them sorted by type of decoy. Makes it easy to just grab the bunch I need for what ever type of hunt we are seting up for.

Good luck this season

I dropped the clips in the mail today.
They are the 3" with swivel that SNL sells. I like the 3" without that they carry as it is a diff. wire shape and works better with gloves than the ones I sent you. Only a problem on our most bone chilling days up here, and not likely to be an issue down there for you.

I dont hunt the big tide of the open sound so the 3 inch has worked great for what I need. The 5 inch is huge and for my needs not nec. so I go with the less costly ones.

See how you like them and then you can experiment.

What I sent is way better than the stuff I see sold for most Quick Rig from non fishing suppliers.

SNL is a great store often overlooked by waterfowl hunters. The home store is Sebastian & I'm in there @ least once a month for fishing & hunting supplies.
