Hopefully the start of a waterdog

Had a little time this afternoon while it was nice to get the pup into some water. This was the first time for him in water over belly deep. I'm happy with how he did. It took a couple times but he made it out to where he wasn't touching bottom. The water was still a little cool but he handled it well for his first time.

Right now sticks are more interesting to him then bumpers and balls.

It's hard to believe that only about ten weeks ago he was this tiny little guy. They do grow fast.

Tim, Looks like fun, make sure it stays that way. Great looking pup, thanks for sharing. So nice to see open water again after the winter that had no end

I envy you with that nice body of water to work your pup in. Deuce is looking great and having fun. Best of luck with your training sessions when you get into full swing with them. I love his enthusiasm,Tim.

Looks like he's doing good Tim.
Just a caution about the sticks. My wife works for a Vet has seen some serious and fatal injuries from retrieving sticks. They grow fast, Have Fun, John

Tim, They do grow fast! Man he's gotten big in a short time. Won't be long and he will have his first duck retrieves. Look forward to seeing the pictures. Jeff

Didn't you just get that pup yesterday? Wow, he has grown... and he is taking to the water nicely! Thanks for updating and sharing your pictures..

John,
I hear you about the sticks. They are not at all what I like him to fetch. I only had a short time at the lake and lately he is in a moody stage about what he wants to retrieve. He wanted a stick so I threw them instead of having him refuse something else. Next time he will be more use to the water and it will be warmer. He should be happier with his bumpers then.

I hear the warning about sticks but must add my own caution about tennis balls, they can make a dog stupid. Once a dog gets addicted to tennis balls they are hopeless. Only kidding, sorta. Oh wait maybe that only applies to labs.

Haha, yeah it seems like only yesterday some days.

I was a bit worried about his growth rate last week when we were around my sisters golden who is a few days older then he is. Deuce was noticeably bigger then her.
He was 25lbs at his vet visit after that so I think most of his growth is in legs right now.

Sticks,Reminds me of a time hunting with a good friend with his dog Abby. She missed a mark on a drake that sailed maybe 70 yds. He picked up a stick to get her attention on the mark and sure enough she brought back the stick. I couldn't stop laughing.
The only time my dogs see sticks and tennis balls is when small children or pretty women are throwing them . They know the rules don't apply then.

I used tennis balls for my tolling work and that worked well but A friend has a golden who is tennis ball crazy and the balls have worn her teeth down terribly.
Am I allowed to say moderation on this board? John

If a dog can't figgure out a stick or tennis ball for play vs. a stick or ball (compared to a bird) in a hunting situation, that is not much of a dog :).

Looks great Tim!

I'm just sure the cold water and sticks are just going to ruin that pup for life :).

The dreaded cold water.........I was waiting for it!

:).

Speaking of cold water... Do you have any thoughts on water temp in the ponds in the Adirondacks last week of Jun first week of July? I'd like to fit in few days in the Saint Regis Canoe Area at that time and was wondering if there would be trout to be caught trolling a wabbler or chucking spinning gear then or would they be headed deeper by then. I've always heard July/August is tough there. We were there in Sept once and had a hard time with the trout, but it was a warm Sept. Thoughts?

I live on Lower St Regis, presently still covered in ice but getting Blacker with each day. The ponds won't iceout for another week or so and then the fishing won't heat up for a week or two after that. So to answer your question yes I think the water temps will be fine the last week of June this year ,but by the 4th the place will be over run with googans:)

The dogs were out swimming in the slush today, breaking ice till they could climb up on to firm ice and retrieve the marks.

Kevin, you guys get a hex hatch on those ponds? End of June/beginning of July has the hexes hatching on trout (and some bass) lakes here most years. Enormous mayflies--large enough they are hard to match with flies--that hatch in very large numbers just at dusk. It can be a cosmic event on a good trout pond.

One of these days the ice will be off them. Iceout is underway but not here and certainly not in the ponds. Ponds are nice everywhere in July.
