How to check rpms on small tiller handled outboards

All outboard motors have an optimum operating rpm range. Having said that, in the past I've always judged whether my small outboards that didn't come equipped with a tachometer were over or under propped by ear. I'd really rather use a tachometer to make that judgment though. Does anyone know of a portable or hand-held tach that can be easily attached to these smaller motors?

there are quite a few on the market but i have a tiny tach installed on my mud motor but the will work on just about anything look them up they are pretty cheap as well 35-50 dollars
