Hey Gents,

Just thought I would put in a plug for a friend and fellow duck hunter/wild forager, who also happens to be an author of the new book Hunt, Gather, Cook - Finding the Forgotten Feast. Hank Shaw will be on a 9-week road trip to promote his book and do some meet and greets at local restaurants and book stores. Check out the map of his various stops. He'll be out on the East Coast toward the end of September. If he stops near a town or city near you, I highly recommend that you meet up with him. His book is great and sits on our recipe/cook book shelf in the kitchen.

Thanks for reading.

Nate,
I had seen your posts about this blog before and checked it out and enjoyed it. I also caught an article in Delta Waterfowls magazine about the cook book. It sure was a nice write up and made me want to get the book. After seeing the blog again today I am ordering the book. Thanks for bringing it back to mind!

Hi Brandon,

I think you will enjoy the book. It is a no-frills cook book that covers just about every way to cook wild game and find and prepare wild edible plants. Did you see Hank's recent post about the fried duck tongues and corned gizzards? He truly does use the WHOLE bird. If anything, his articles have inspired me to try new things. He is a great guy too. I met him through his mum, who is our next door neighbor. She saw me out in the front yard working on some decoys once, and came over to chat about hunting and fishing. Hank came up last summer and we fished for a day. He is coming back out this way for his book tour and we'll doing some fishing or hunting together, and some woods foraging for mushrooms as well.

Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the book as much as we have.

Best,
Nate G.

Love that site. Have used a few of his recipes and they have been spot on. Just looked at it yesterday for some dove ideas.

Need to save some money to buy the book.

Hey Fred,

The book is great. I think you can get them for under $20 on Amazon, with shipping.

I've been following Hank on his Facebook page as he makes his way east. He'll be hunting WW doves in Texas soon, which kills me. I've always wanted to do that. We'll probably see some more dove recipes soon.

Best,
Nate G.

would love to spend a day fishing with him. Maybe some day.

I check his site often. Always find interesting things to try or do with game.

Hey Folks,

Just got word that my friend Hank Shaw won the 2013 James Beard Award for Best Blog.

How cool is that?

Good on ya, Hank!

Saw a photo last night from the Beard Awards with him and Rinella. I make it a point to check out anything Rinella suggests. I will be buying his book and have bookmarked his blog. These "new" guys are really changing/inspiring thoughts on hunting and I believe will slowly see a shift towards a "provide for yourself" mentality and hopefully an increase in hunting awareness and participation. I am currently reading "the four hour chef" by Ferriss, introduced to me by Rinella as well.

lots of good stuff coming out these days
