Hunting NJ

Hey guys looking for some info. I grew up hunting the Forsyth refuge in Barnegat, NJ. Is the boat ramp open off of Bay Ave in Barnegat. I wanted to bring a friend from Virginia to experience some NJ water fowling. How bad did the storm affect this area. Thanks for the help. Is anyone guiding in this area, it has been 25 years since I have hunted NJ.

There are a lot of statements out there from all waters being closed for security and safety reasons, only licensed captains being allowed on the water, only the barrier islands being off limits, etc. and I haven't heard a straight answer on any of them. I do know people fishing near Barnegat Light recently were escorted back to the ramp by marine police and people scouting in the northern coastal zone had the same thing happen to them.

I do know there are marine advisories out for high levels of fecal matter in the water due to compromised sewer systems. Something to think about with yourself and your dogs.

There is also a ton of debris in the water, some obvious and some not so obvious. Running in the dark is not something I would advise without a great deal of caution.

Open ramps are another issue entirely. Many marinas and low lying areas are in bad shape and many roads were washed out. Basically everything is up in the air.

Small game opens Saturday too so grab a springer and have at it.

Seriously with all the debris out there, someone is going to puncture a hull.

Latest news is that people are taking kayaks out of Bayville and paddling across the Barnegat at night to loot. Seriously, the marine police should just run these dirtbags over. Paddling at night without any lights etc. run them over bah-bump... What was that? Um, nothing captain. Just a piece of driftwood.

The municipal ramp in Barnegat is damaged and not useable from my understanding. There are reports that the coast guard says the navigable waters of the bay are closed, but there are people fishing. If you want to try and launch in that area check out a similar thread from yesterday, I listed a few places to call where I think the ramps are open in Waretown.

here is some phone numbers to try d-bay 856-785-0730 tuckahoe 609-628-3218 nanacote 609-748-2063 they are the wildfowl div of those places maybe get some solid replies there

As per the NJSP Marine office in Pt. Pleasant the bay is open but caution should be used with all the debris and DO NOT APPROACH the barrier island AT ALL our you will be arrested. Also they said from Tuckerton south is ok but noth of Tuckerton there is alot of debris in the water.

I have also confirmed what Tim said. I really would not worry that much about going duck hunting on the bay at this point, I just wouldn't do any high speed runs in the dark. Doesn't sound like you would anyway. The parts of Forsyth that you hunted are still there in the same place, with some minor adjustments, and are on the mainland side, so you would be a couple of miles at least from LBI. Should be some ducks there by now and some brant.
