If you hunt in remote places...

Another option is one of the traditional striker based fire starters. striker

I carry one of these in almost every tackle bag I have. Use them often enough to be proficient with them too. Always dependable and my luck with an electronic one, would be some sort of system failure rendering them useless. I wonder if the electronic version would survive a dunking.

A lot of options when choosing survival gear and having both styles could be a good choice as well.

And don?t forget, a signal flare (that many already carry) is an excellent long lasting and impossible to put out fire starter.

I have the firestick, but wanted something that gave me better flame production potential to light the steel wool packs I keep in the dry box.

Todd, I do save my expired flares, both for that purpose(fire starter) as well as expanded signaling potential. As an experiment I dropped four of them in a bucket with their caps on tight, and then attempted to light each of them. Two fired right up. One sputtered and popped for a bit and went out, and one would not light-not much of a confidence builder. I double bagged all of the remainder in an effort to keep them dry. The last time I was trapped for an extended period via a blow motivated me to buy a TDB. Four duck boats sank that day on the St. Marys River- decoys scattered along the downwind shoreline for a couple of days afterwards. I found out later from the Sheriff's patrol folks that we were one of three boats took shelter on islands when I reported-in that we were able to get back to the mainland.
