In search of Dinosaurs and and other finned creatures- Picture Sunday

Since I cant post pics from work on Tuesday, today will just have to do.

A couple of weeks ago I went on my very first dinosaur hunting trip...unlike Dave, who I am sure embarked on many a dinosaur hunting adventure in his younger years. I met up with a friend and made the trek to the mighty Hells Canyon on the Snake River. We set up camp in the dark and prepared to begin our quest at the break of dawn.

At daybreak we headed through the rapids up river in search the ancient beasts that roam these waters. Since I was new to this game I was given the first opportunity to go toe to toe, or toe to fin, with our quarry. We threw out the bait and waited in silence...when the rod started to twitch I jumped up and set the hook...the tug on the rod was tremendous but after a short battle I had done it...I landed my first white sturgeon.

I know, I know....not the mythical ancient dinosaur they are made out to be huh? Well after a while we moved to another location where once again I hooked up.....and this time I mean HOOKED UP!

The battle was on...and on....and on...and on. We went back and forth for just over an hour with the fish coming all the way out of the water twice. I'd get it near the boat and it would take off like a freight train. We finally got it landed and took it to shallow water for a picture or two.

The fish measured 8' 7" and was 42" around just behind the pectoral fins....according to the charts that puts this badboy at 425-450 lbs. Holy crap what fight.

We fished for two days solid and caught right around 30 fish ranging from the little fella in the first picture to the big one above. Lots of the fish we caught were arounf 6' and only took about 20-30 minutes to battle in.

I also did a little salmon fishing last week. Steve and Debby came over for the opener of our salmon season. It's early and the run is not panning out as predicted so the fishing was tough but Steve and I managed to catch a couple decent fish on the opener but weren't as lucky the next day. After Steve left I fished two more days and got skunked on the first. The second day was much better as I managed to finally catch a salmon over 30 lbs.........31.2 to be exact.

I know fishing this much is rough but hey, a guy has to find something to do when the weather is hot.

Gregg,

What an adventure. Must have been a blast. Got into something that big once on Beaver Lake in Arkansas. Turned out to be a 8' long alligator gar caught on a silver spoon. Wife got so shoock up I had to cut the line. She said if that was coming in the boat she was going out!

Gregg,

First, dam nice fish. both of them the one from the Snake and the one from the Columbia.

Second, you drove right through the home town and didn't call. That hurts man! Aspen is considering cutting you out of her will.

My best,

Don Shearer

That Snake River is a heck of a great spot for Sturgeon and you sure found them. You'l have to take Steve over there sometime and put him on one of those big "Whoop-ass-Kicking" Dino's. Those things can really pput the hurt on ya as you found out.

Up-river from where you were. Above Ox-Bow Dam, I have seen 12 footers breaching out of the river like pods of whales, they are amazing to see. THe best thing about getting a few fish in the slot size is the meat. They are one incredably good eating fish. I think you may have started a whole new type of fishing for yourself Gregg.

Nice salmon by the way too!

Dave

GREG,FANTASTIC ,I couldn't get over the first time I ate sturgeon grilled.hey were terrific
The Salmon,to die for.

As a kid the sturgeon was my favorite to eat, NO BONES.

They would drag you up river ,down river, across the river, and back and not necessarily in that order.

It will be hard to concentrate on work today.

Nice Fish!

Eric

catches the WORLD's SMALLEST Halibut and then goes to the Snake and catches the WORLD's SMALLEST STURGEON.....(I didn't even know they came that small).....at least he redeemed himself on the Sturgeon.....

Dave, the Snake is 100% Catch and Release....no slot.....
