It actually happened!

The duck gods must have known. We, in the desert southwest, are in the middle of a century long drought and yesterday it rained an inch where we live and more up in the mountains. The one arroyo that ran hard was the very one that helps me out during the teal season. In 20 minutes Habi and I will head out to see what the water conditions look like and if any teal are there when day breaks.
Our early teal season begins tomorrow and with this amount of rainfall and run off the places that I hunt should be prime time for ducks. We'll see.

Good news Al. Have a great hunt.

Well, this sure made me feel good this morning when Habi and I went out. Saw a few bluewing/cinnamons and even the pup was getting nervous!

I just had to put this shot in there. Habi was like the proverbial "March" hare this morning when I let her romp around. When we got home she got a bath! Have to admit that she sure had fun. Early this morning when some teal landed not too far from her, I was surprised at her staying power. She whimpered a little hoping that I would let her go but that didn't work.

Thanks so much, fellas. I appreciate all the well wishes. Here it is the first day of teal season and I was barely able to sleep last night---being wide awake at 3AM. I have had this disease now since 1954, when I went on my first duck hunt and shot a bluewing teal with my Winchester Sweet 16 model 12 in a duck slough just a little northeast of Ortonville, Minnesota.

Today will be different however. I guess with life one learns to accept the ups and downs that comes with it. When the season opens this morning I'll be taking my wife to the airport in Albuquerque.
We have a grandson who is a senior in high school and loves to play football especially defense. Well, a little over two weeks ago he incurred another concussion. There have already been trips to the hospital and seeing the neuro-surgeon. Long story shortened---single mom needs to go back to work, grandson is still home with severe headaches which are now starting to get a little better, so grandma is heading for Green Bay today. We all know that grandma's home cooking won't cure concussions, however, maybe Bev's being there will help. We have our fingers crossed on this one. This young man's dream of playing football is now over for good.
I can always go duck hunting on another day. Today is just not going to be the one.

Took these two shots while scouting for ducks yesterday. The first one is a wild sunflower and the other is a Sacred Datura also known as Jimson weed.

Al,
Sorry to hear about your grandson, but glad that he's recovering! For me it was soccer and knees/ankles. I think I was limping around during duck season every year I was in high school. There are priorities. Enjoy the change in the weather and the time out when you get to go.
