Thought I'd be creative and edit last year's (March 31, 2015) post so the extremely different dates would stand out End of last week I thought I heard a woodcock flying around but didn't get a visual nor did I hear a Veep! Today's walk they were all over the neighborhood with a couple of ducks chuckling overhead. It hit 55 yesterday, ice fishing never happened this winter and now the woodcock have shown up 2 plus weeks early. I did go back to other posts to see when I reported them other years. I sure hope they are right that spring is close or maybe here? Hope so, as no ice fishing means I'm ready for spring!
Welcome back Woodcock! 2016

WOODCOCK are BACK! Winter is hanging on, it's still A very dark, 5:50 am and 31 F outside, but I just finished my morning walk with Marsh and the swamp is full of Veeps and the twittering flight noise of woodcock. I love it when they show up. Most are just stopping in on the edge of the snow cover on their way further north but a few will stay and nest here.
Almost makes up for the other creature out Friday morning in the warmish rain. We've been dealing with stink since. The hardest thing to get the skunk stink off of is his plastic hearing aid collar, both the electronics box as well as the rubber collar itself. I've tried the peroxide, soap & baking soda, as well as a commercial scent eliminator previously recommended here with less then complete removal. Oh well, I'm sure time will eliminate it, as we've been here a few other times over the last 20 years.
WELCOME BACK WOODCOCK !!!
