HELP; loosing sleep, I got this damned woodpecker banging like a jack hammer almost avery morning at dawns lite.He picked the corner of my house where the bed room is located,I think he is pecking inside the rain gutter. He is a little dude with light brown fleck body feather and a red stripe up the back of his head.,alittle smaller tha a robin.I put my robe on to try to see what he finds so interesting, but as soon as I go out the door he takes off.Yesterday he brought a friend I think its his girl friend. I don't want to kill him,but if it comes to that I might {do I need a permit for this or jest my reg. hunt.Lisc.?} Does anyone have a solution as how to resolve this. Desperate. No joke this is real.

owl decoy...nail mouse traps to the eave...firecrackers with a long fuse...woodpeckers are delicious...taste a bit like spotted owl...

Cas,
This little guy just wants to make sure you don't miss the morning sunrise-----that is all! Good luck, by the way. Same thing happened to me back in the 70's while living in Wausau, Wisconsin. That is when all of our elm trees were being taken over by the Dutch elm disease and the woodpeckers were having a hay day.

Cas, he's doing you a potential favor... they eat bugs, ... maybe you've got some boring critters in there...

Cas,

Same thing happened to us back in the early '80s. Had one hammering on a roof vent until mating season was over except it happened every spring. It was so loud I thought the heating pipes were banging and the house coming apart. I never did figure out a way to keep him away. We just lived with it until he found his lady friend.

Others have hit on two possibilities as to why he is there:
1, he is hammering to attract a mate. So if he brought a girlfriend this morning, your problems may be over.
2, he is getting breakfast from your wood trim or siding, in which case you really have a problem. But if he is hammering on metal, then that is not it, go back to No.1 or down to No. 3.
3, he is hammering to sound out his territory, in which case he may not stop till late summer. I had one at a past house that liked the metalic sounds that the spark arrestor on my chimney made. It was noisy but I didnt mind.

How to stop him?
Well, they are protected under the migratory bird treaty act. So if you use lethal methods, you better keep it quiet. Or hire a critter control company which will have the permits.
Rubber snake may work, woodpeckers hate rat snakes, which can crawl up trees & raid nests.
The fake owl may work as well.
Or just live with nature in your backyard.

Cas, either stuff a small wad of tp in each ear, or just enjoy the sounds of spring. Quit being an old fart!!

Turn off your hearing aid or roll over on your good ear. I've lost over 60% hearing in my left ear so when the birds start up before I want to get up I just roll over and never hear them after that. Seems like most guys my age have some hear loss in at least one ear.

They are protected by MBTA, killing or injury without a permit is illegal, and FWS will issue permits to kill it but you'll have to try some of the non-lethal things mentioned above before you'll get a permit.

This is how woodpeckers "sing" for mates in the spring.

Hey Bill, what you got right there is a Pileated Woodpecker and those boys can do some serious damage to trees. I once watched one make quick of about six foot of rotted out tree in less then half hour. They can be a hundred yards away and are still LOUD!! very cool to see them though, occaisonally I see them out behinds pops house.

Speaking of old farts ;how you doing george,I see you still swim with your clothes on with those bonny legs I don't blame you Ha Ha Ha

Andrew, I hope not .My house is concrete block and vinal siding all facia board alluminum clad.He was pecking in the rain gutter.
