I got the below email today from the area biologist when I asked about the greentree levee repair and this summer's planting. Fellow North Alabama waterfowlers may find it of interest.

We have a new weir in place at the GT a few yards from the blowout, all we are
waiting on now is dry weather so we can get some dirt to fill the blowout hole.
The project should be complete by the end of August. My plans are to drop
three boards in the weirs this fall and fill the GT to full capacity to check
the integrity of the system. As far as Raccoon Creek, we are working on another
project there by installing a new discharge pipe at the river to help with
dewatering and it has taken longer than expected due to weather, so we were
late getting pumped out. We are getting close to being dry, but I think corn
and grain sorghum are going to be out of the question since they are 120 day
crops. So my plans are to spot spray weeds and plant millet. We are battling
alligator weed and water primrose almost everywhere and I have found that a
mixture of Roundup and 2-4D works best to knock it back. TVA has helped us out
with these two projects this year and looks like we will be partnering with
them to do a few more projects at Raccoon Creek next year, so it's looking good
for the future. The dewatering unit at Mud Creek (Wannville) is looking great
as well as the Upland Dove fields.

Hopefully we will have another cold winter, which will push all the ducks down.

i wish they would do something like this on wma's in new jersey all we get is some indian grass and the dirt roads graded.

Great news although I never go over there. I wish we could get some of the same forward thinking at Swan. Our little greentree here has not held good water for five years. That and some management of the shooting times in the unit would go along way at keeping ducks around over here. I hope your summer is going well Eric! maybe we will see you this season if you venture over to the wild west!

Why isn't it holding water? I can't imagine the beavers being removed. The dam at the old control strucutre was intact the last time I was over there. Sorry to hear it's not holdng many ducks. Hunting pressure certainly is the largest cause for that.

You turning any calls these days? Once my shop is done I'm going to have call making parties. Wouldn't be right if you weren't there.

Not too much turning these days, teenagers seem to take up too much time! Time well spent though. I would however love to come down for the christening of the new building when you get it finished, that sounds like it would be a lot of fun.
Actually the top end does hold water and a few ducks, the bottom end is dry and so motoring from the new check station and jumping the death stakes and beaver dam are out. We still get back there on occasion with canoes and and one or more of Brian's flotilla of small boats.
I just realized my avatar is from there. That is Belle back in her prime. She is 14 now and retired but still a constant companion around the yard.
