Jay Strangis: New Magazine

Well, as we all know, life is full of surprises. One of the major surprises for me in a very long time is that Jay Strangis will be the editor of another waterfowl magazine. Myself, and others in the waterfowl world had hoped his name would be forgotten, and we could move forward once again. In order to start up a new magazine deep pockets are required, and I really question the wisdom of the individual with those pockets to select Jay Strangis to get a return on his investment. I personally hope for the worst with this new venture.

Regarding a much more positive subject, many of you are now aware that Paul Wait took over WILDFOWL after Strangis was fired. As John Devney of Delta Waterfowl remarked, "Now that is a breath of fresh air." Paul is a good guy. Like former editor, Roger Sparks, he is an avid waterfowler. Prior to taking over from Strangis, he was editor of THE TRAPPER & PREDATOR CALLER. What I admired about Paul was the fact that he came to the job having never trapped before. He made that very clear to readers. Then, with each passing year, he kept us informed about how he was learning with his trap line. And again, while he had never trapped, he certainly has hunted ducks. I wish him all the best with WILDFOWL. Worth Mathewson

Worth....I like you even more now than I did when I first started to read your articles when I was in junior high! Ain't pullin' any punches are ya!

With what Strangis did to Wildfowl, there's no way I will spend any money on a subscription to his new catastrophe.

Wow Worth. You know what I like about your writing on the DHBP? You are great at writing posts here to one of your bids for items, or to trump an offed acquaintance, in this case your old nemesis of an editor. Its quite an innovative way to use this site and the graciousness to the new guy in charge of wildfowl was pretty clever. Often I wish to see your writing prowess here more to other endeavors. This post seemed to be such a wasteful slam of your talents.
Frankly I could care a less about Wildfowl, before of during Strangis, the material was redundant and often lacking in creativity and innovation. But it is a magazine and advertising/product placement sells and pays writer salaries. In defense of the "deep pockets" investing in this editor, I would assume that they vetted out the pros and cons to a decision. I'd suspect business acumen of investment to override the diva-like endeavors of sales, writers and to some extent the critics.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the new Wildfowl and this new Strangis endeavor.

*this post would not be possible without using a Dell keyboard and a HP laptop on a Herman Miller desk while sitting in an Office Depot ergonomic chair.

Do you know who is backing the new magazine? To me it seems...well, at the very least petty, spiteful, and vindictive to wish the worst for someone you do not know. Perhaps the financier knows Jay Stangis in a completely different context than you.

I know very little about Strangis. However, I always found it weird that an editor of a major duck hunting magazine would spend his time writing editorials on getting screwed on a moose hunt or eating ho-ho's and fried chicken. After a while it was just common to skip his page.

Worth, I too would enjoy seeing your writing again in Wildfowl. In my opinion, Wildfowl's content and writing declined during the former editors tenure. Hopefully it will improve with the new guy.

DeWayne, Naw, not "petty" nor "spiteful". "Vindictive?" Yep, you are totally correct. And I think with good cause. A great deal of that comes from nothing to do with me. For me it was all very simple--I just quit after Strangis. Actually, there are a lot of other issues surrounding him. I just don't feel he is best to be a major spokesman for waterfowling. And I will always express strong opinions when dealing with waterfowl and waterfowling. Worth

Worth, we noticed this the other day in this post....

From a quick review of the American Waterfowler website it looks to be a repeat of Jays work at Waterfowl. Nothing new to add to the context of waterfowl hunting.

"I personally hope for the worst with this new venture".

In this economy the last thing I would want to wish on anyone was for an endeavor to fail. Think of all the people that this endeavor supports (not just the guy you dont like). I wish them the best, who knows they might have a new crop of writers that actually can find thier way out of a Highlight magazine.

Yeah man, I don't have a dog in this fight. I posted the original thread about a new mag I heard of, that's all.

Lots of angry people hear for sure.

No anger here, i just notice how posts are geared towards pumping an item (hmm sounds like a magazine we have all seen), a cause, or slamming a less favorable author. Compellingly obvious and not to the typical nature of this site, no matter who you are in duck hierarchy.

I agree with Derek.....not to the typical nature of this site and should be deleted.

Best
Bob

Regardless of your feelings for Strangis, I just don't understand why you would "hope for the worst with this new venture" and wish ill will on another human being's, (the financier of the new magazine), business venture and finances.
