What H.P. mud motor would you put on a 12' x32" jon boat . what brand would you use , I know Scavenger is low in lb's but is it a good M.M. Are ther Surface Drive Engine that are in the low hp like I need?
unfortunately the answer your likely to get is none. At least in my experience a 32 inch bottom is insufficint for proper performance. A 1436 is the minimum in a john type boat or a 1236 if there is such a beast. You want as much surface area as possible. I tried a 5.5 Scavenger on a 1432 and it drn near sunk it just sitting at rest. Surface area man, lots of it.
The smallest & lightest one you can get.
I am not a fan of mud motors on small jon boats, mud motors are much heavier then an outboard of the same HP and most really small jon boats really arent made to handle that kind of weight on the transom.
Sorry to be discouraging but swamping/tipping a boat that small is easy enough without overloading the transom with the weight of a mud motor. Be careful!
I've got the same size jon boat and run a Briggs & Stratton 5hp motor that weighs about 51 lbs and I wouldn't put any more wt. on her that that. 110lb mud motor is sure to dunk the transom
Ditto, my 1236 runs a 6 foot homemade longtail, and while it's not the fastest thing on the river, it's sometimes the only thing on the river when flows are low. My home made is pattened after a mud buddy 6.5 longtail, and it will put two people anywhere you need to go. Just mount it low and hang on.
