Lake St. Clair Blocks

I just came into a small flock of decoys that I have never seen before and I cant find any info about them online.

These are mixed divers, plastic, heavy duty well made decoys with the label "Lake St. Clair Blocks -Made in the USA" on one side of the keel and "Made by Hunters for Hunters - Carved by M. Mueller"

Anyone have any information?

Seems like I remember something about that name. Are they a nice real duck shape but maybe loosing their paint?

Hi Scott,
Yes, those are very nice blocks, with the originals carved by Matt Mueller...a local fella. They were manufactured right here in Mt. Clemens/Clinton township. The fellas also owned the North Channel Brewing Company as well. Great bunch of guys. They were originally making them for themselves just to gun over and use up some of their regrind plastic from their automotive manufacturing operation. The regrind thing was their downfall though. The plastic wouldn't hold paint. They were actually using FME but the surface wasn't prepped right and the paint just fell off at times.

I had some in here and dropped them in lacquer thinner and the paint just slid off....except for the head. No matter what I did, it stuck there. That was more than likely due to their mix of plastic and that part of the mold was shot with some virgin plastic mixed in with the regrind.

They never solved the paint sticking thing and shut down the operation several years ago.
Some of the birds can be made to hold paint by sand blasting them or sanding with rough paper. Other birds needed to be flame etched to get paint to stick.
The big trouble with regrind is that when that plastic is ground up, it's also got all that mold release ground in with it as well.
It's a shame......great blocks.

Matt has been in here several times and has also been over to our Flats Show before. Very talented fella.

Lou I wonder If the decoys were sprayed with Fusion as a under coat. If the paint would stick. It works on Plastic chairs.

Hmmmmm, good idea. We've got a couple 55 gallon drums of those things that my son picked up. I'll have to give the fusion a try. Great idea.
Tnx,
Lou

That's a bummer it's hard to get them to hold paint. I remember seeing them 10 years ago on the net somewhere and they were GHG type shapes well before Avery did it.

What ones do you have Scott? Wish we had some around here but I don't think they stayed in business long enough to reach this far from the great lakes.

OK me too.

Then I can bring them down to the lake and we can all go out and hunt over Lake St. Clair Blocks with Lou.

THAT will be the day. Whattya think Lou? Leave the E. Allens in the barrels?

NOT!!

I believe there are some drake and hen Cans, bluebills and redheads. Theres only 8 or 9 but I would be happy to trade them for something fun ...I'm very easy

Lou if fusion works you can just send some of them west since you have all those e allens you don't want to neglect. :-)
