yesterday went to stag island in canada for the last hunt of the season for our group -- stag island is in the middle of the st. clair river between canada and the u.s -- late in the year its a great place for ducks -- you never know whats gonna fly by

we stand in the river next to dock pilings with the decoys out in front -- we put a couple of longlines of divers in front of us and puddlers to each side -- geese off to the sides of the puddlers

yesterday we got to the island about 10:00am - set up the spreads and hunted till dark

we got 6 geese - 4 mallards - 4 goldeneyes - 2 ruddy ducks - 1 can - 6 buffies

not a bad way to end the season!

George,not a bad way to start one,or any day in-between,I'd say.Good hunting.

very true -- i guess i'd be happy if all the duck days ended with a catch like that -- lol

the island is really fun -- we never know what to expect -- and the variety in a day is really quiet fun

i had one day this year earlier in the season where i shot a drake woodie, a can, and a teal over the same decoy spread -- its like a smorgasbord of ducks there

George - a quick question for you on hunting Canada from another border guy further to the south. (Downriver/lake Erie area).

When you hunt like this do you make an "official" entry into Canada and launch from the Cdn side or do you just launch from the US side and boat over? I know the general guideline in the summer is that if you launch from the US side you can fish cdn. waters with no customs or border patrol issues as long as you don't make a landing in Canada or anchor in Cdn waters. When layout hunting we end up close to the line some days anyway and it always seems like we could get into more birds if we were another 1/4 mile east.

I've been thinking about getting a Cdn license for the past couple of years so I can extend the season by a few weeks. Unfortunately down here they still don't allow Sunday hunting on the Cdn side and I can't justify the money for just a few more Saturdays. The Canadians seem to be making progress in allowing Sunday hunting in more areas so we'll see what happens next year.

still no sunday hunting in our area

we used to just go across and hunt - without checking in - BUT last summer they busted a drug selling operation on the island - they had a years worth of survalience of everyone on the island - coming and going -- they had immigration involved also -- they let the "law abiding" residents know that coming and going without checking in would be no longer tolerated

SO now we cross the border at sarnia or sombra and declare the weapons and the ducks when we return, except the cabin owner on the island who has some special paperwork he applied for where he can call in and leave from the states -- if you have your paperwork in order its not a problem going over -- and coming back into the states its usually not a problem unless you get a customs agent that doesn't care for hunters and wants to check "everything" -- but that happens rarely enough not to be a deterrent.

i hear now in canadian waters you better have purchased your minnows +/o worms at a canadian bait store and be able to show a receipt or you'll be fined for bringing "foreign" bait into canada -- know of two people who got fined in mitchells bay for that reason.

There is a special rule for Lake St. Clair that you can not be out in the lake any further than 300 meters from shore, weed patch or stake line. I understand that they have made some 200 meter safety zones along the south shore. You should look in to these rules before crossing the border boundary. Lake Erie does not have this rule that I know of, only at Long Point.
