Layout build ? about box depth.

I am in the process of building a Busick/Marshmonster style one-man layout boat, and I have a question about box depth. I weigh 250, and the other guys who might use this weigh from 200-300.
If I go with a 6" box instead of the standard 4" box, do you think it will float too high (cast the shadow under the apron). I run with some big guys, and want the layout to handle it.
I guess I can build it with the 6" box and add a sandbag or two if it floats too high.
So far I have the apron glassed together and the bow bulkhead in. Tomorrow I will be installing the stern bulkhead and fitting the box together.

Tony;

I did the EXACT thing you are asking about...I built my Busic and added 2" to the box for more foot room (I am 200 lbs) and thought it would work...What A Mistake!!! The boat sat too high above the water. The apron was 2" above the water which made the boat ride somewhat like having a beachball under it...Very Unstable! I ended up cutting the box back down to the original dimmensions called out in the plans and reglassing the boat. Once the apron got back on the surface of the water, it became the most stable platform I could ask for. I would NOT recommend altering the plans of your boat.

Thanks, I will just rip the box sides down a couple inches then. I have finished the top for now (all of the bulkheads, doublers, etc.). Tomorrow I will look at the box, and at least get the sides mounted to the bulkheads, maybe even the bottom on too.

you're a BIG BOY and it sounds like your potential partners are BIG BOYS as well....that means the 6" deep box will be much easier on your feet, your legs and your back, which means that you'll appreciate the boat much more than if you're overly cramped in a cockpit sized to fit those oh so frequent duck hunters with Paris Hilton builds......

If the 6" deep box floats a little high then you can weight it for each individual to get it down to the right level which will make everyone happy....if you make it 4" and everyone is cramped then you can't change that and everyone is unhappy.....

I'll take "HAPPY" everyday.....

My .02 and as the man says "worth every penny".....

The box below the boat was calculated for the the right displacement for it's size. If you do not understand the alterations you want to make, then do not. It would be better if you altered the framing and raise the top of the compartment to give you more room. It is best to keep the edges of the boat in the water. This will allow the water to wash up along the the edges to blend in like a partly submerged object. If you look closer at classic style boats, they use this style of construction to gain room.
