Lee,

Been eyeing a burl on a big dogwood on a back road by my house for years. Trees along this stretch have been marked for cutting (I think someone's putting in a road to a building lot), the dogwood among them. I went over and lopped off the burl with my chainsaw this afternoon. Probably a foot in diameter. Planning on slicing some turning blocks out of it on the bandsaw eventually.
Here's my question: Temps have been in the teens & single-digits for a week here. Was zero this a.m. and hit a high of 13. After wire brushing off all the "alligator" bark & junk, I put this burl on the side porch (think bringing it in would cause a temp change that would definitely be too rapid). How should I go about acclimating it to the shop, and what would you coat the cut face with to prevent checking? I have used paste floor wax on the ends of cut boards.

I think for a fancy hunk like that I would invest in a qt of Pentacryl (sp) to seal the ends. How long was it down and what time of year was it cut? If it was spring, summer or early fall(last month) it could have quite a bit of moisture in it. I'm not sure whether bringing it in would hurt it or not ..I doubt it.. don't put it in the same room with the wood burner..get the ends sealed good as soon as you can. A lot of people just put a thick coat of paint on them..latex or oil base. Cool find.
