Finally took a walk through the new Cabelas store that opened right up the road from me last month. Frankly, I was a bit underwhelmed. Dunno, but it used to be a treat when there were just a few; now they all seem pretty sterile. Ugly logo gear with insane prices abounds.

However..... on the UP-side. I walked out with my Ohio, Indiana, & Kentucky licenses; two boxes of 2 3/4 high-speed #2's; and handful of Bass Stopper worms --- all paid for with the "Cabelas Club" points that have been accumulating on my card. + I still have lots of points left. I am happy for that, and I know where I'll be getting my non-resident licenses from now on.

Let the seasons begin!

I appreciate - and identify with - your sentiments, especially "[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]Ugly logo gear". Other than automobiles or outboards, my longstanding policy is to avoid buying anything with a conspicuous corporate ID on it. One of my favorite Onion headlines from several years ago: "Thirteen-year-old collapses under weight of corporate logos."

And, I just stitched a new canvas seat onto my Dad's old L.L. Bean folding stool - circa 1975. It's good for another 40 seasons, I think.....

Finally, with your reference to Mr. King - do you shoot an old smokepole named "Lucille" ?

All the best,

SJS

I'm with you. All I see now are the price tags in one of those. They are getting out of hand with cost. I used to be a big cabelas shopper, credit card and all. I gave up when all my points got me was free shipping and no tax.

The feeling is becoming that of a Walmart of the hunti world, at target prices.

Then it got cheaper to shop on Amazon. And I haven't looked back.

With you guys 100% on the logos. For the last 20 or so years since the onslaught of logomania I've removed the logos wherever possible. Especially big ticket stuff like boats, although for some reason the EVINRUDE or JOHNSON logo doesn't bother me. Maybe because they were always there.

Now if someone would just make a modern, GoreTex or equal waterfowl parka in plain old dead grass brown, I might leave the logo intact. Darn camo everywhere.

Amen and agreed. Dead grass. Our predecessors killed many, many ducks and geese without looking like sere, withered salad.

SJ~

Maybe it's the shared initials....but I, too, avoid camo where I can - and long for my old Dead Grass Tan parkas of rubberized canvas. (I have a nice McAllister waxed cotton wading parka.)

All the best,

SJS

Don't get me wrong, I will pay for quality gear that serves its purpose. But, Steve, I am with you 100% about the self-imposed boycott on stuff with "logo-overkill." I was looking to replace a favorite 3/4 facemask that I had purchased for under 10 bucks many years ago. Closest I could find to what I wanted was made by Under-Armor, and I swear it must've had the UA logo (in fluorescent green & right on the front of the mask no-less) + the words "Under Armor" in no less than 4 places. Price: $39.99???!!!???

Had been looking through all my equipment to see where I might have misplaced my old plain one without any luck. Today when I came home I checked the pockets of one of my sons' hunting coats and BINGO! - there it was.

I don't care if there is a big or small logo... or no logo... I just never have a need to leave the store with anything.... :( I guess that means I have spent too much money there!

Perhaps it is the initials Steven, but I rather suspect it may also be special memories from the "old days". This from an old fart of 55. Unfortunately I can't remember the brand we wore pre-GoreTex, but they may have been Bean's similar in style to your jacket. My family loved stopping at Bean's when enroute to camp. I do know the logos were inside the breast area of the jacket, as they should be.

So the question is, can't somebody talk a garment manufacturer into a run of DGB? :)

You used to be able to walk in and find a Columbia Widgeon waterfowling jacket. No More...Seems to me more and more of the items say Cabelas on them. Heck, they even have duck and goose calls with their "Brand" name. I too can walk in, walk around and most times,...leave without giving them a penny.

I now live 7 miles from a Cabelas' and have gone in and out without dropping a dime. More than once I have bought things there and returned it the same day because when I got it home it turned out to be a total P.O.S. When I find a bad merchandise it almost always has a label that says CHINA. They need to be very careful with their image of quality or the loyal will leave. BTW the logos are neither here nor there for me, I don't need them to be a better hunter but they don't bother me either

I agree. Cabelas has been a big disappointment to me too !

We had a new store open in Noblesville, Indiana. I stopped in on my way to pick up my Sportspal canoe in a nearby town. I wanted to shop for 10 gauge shotgun shells and waist high waders. They had 6 boxes of Hypersonic BB 10 gauge in the entire store, and no waist high waders !

I wanted to look at quality waterfowl clothing as I'm tired of being wet and cold. I found the quality of their top of the line waterfowl clothing to be lacking. The only thing it wasn't lacking in was price. I would have been happier shopping online.

I guess I'll have to go with Sitka for my waterfowl clothing.

Are you guys sure we can still kill a duck or a goose in plain tan clothing ? I don't think ducks and geese are made like they were when our fathers and grandfathers hunted. They're a new breed ! ;)

Fred

Cabelas has become an overpriced Walmart. They use to have hard to find items and it was OK to pay a little premium for one stop shopping. Now they seem to just sale a name.

I sure wish we still had our Sportsman's Warehouse. I liked that place a lot. It was a completely different atmosphere in there.

I was wondering the same thing, but I sure want the opportunity to try.

Can you check your sons other coat pocket and see if my license is in there for me?

Thanks -

+1

I agree

Since the outdoor channels have become nothing more than ads for their sponsors outdoor clothing pricing is insane. I stopped at the Cabelas in Mitchell last week on my way to WY and was turned off by the prices.
........
This fall I needed (wanted) a different waterfowl coat so I set up an Ebay search and watched for couple of months and then bought a like new Quad Jacket for $70. My western camo is Kings camo from Amazon $16 for a pair of 5 pocket pants and my woodland stuff is close out Natgear.
........
I also spent 2 hours over two evenings patching my 10 year old waist high waders. Don't wear em much and I am not going to pay the inflated prices for waders until I absolutely have to.

Quite a few years ago, I switched from Cabela's to Roger's Sporting Goods. They know how to ship items and quickly. Not only that they are very competitive in their pricing.

I sure have to agree with the majority of the opinions given on this thread. Things like this happen when your first order in the business world is to satisfy the stockholders.

I was once a huge supporter of Cabelas , i still have there gear that is when it was made to last , i went into our new ( back a few years ago Now ) store in Conn. and immediately got that bargain outlet feel ! I have not been into any other Cabelas so i was assuming it was just that one but i guess not. I to shop at Rogers , Wing supply , and Mack's Prairie wings because we do not have a local mom and pop to buy from here in RI or i would be there !!! I just left the corporate work world and will never go back they have ruined this country in my opinion !! Shop local if you can !!!

I don't mind the logos so much, but the fluorescent ones drive me crazy. I mean come on, really??
