Lil Donny's (Adonis) first night out

Tore outta work like a bat outta He dbl hockey sticks. Hit the marsh with my usual perfect timing and scarred everything out. set a small spread and waited for them to return, and waited, and waited. with around ten to go I caught a glimpse of some fast movers. I thought they were maybe teal from the corner of my eye. As they cut passed their skritch scratch call belied another delight. Snipe. There is a ton of floating veg mats around where I was sitting. They actually look like mud flats but don't try to walk on them cuz you go straight on through.

Three snipe set in to one flat just left of center in the spread. the others made one last close pass in. Popped up and took a poke, and low and behold I rolled one with a load of 2's. luckily NOT in the center of the pattern. The rest skeedaddled and I spent the last five minutes admiring the cool little guy and waiting on the mallards or woodies to roll back in. which they did.....when I was picking up the dekes. No matter if it is with gun at the ready or totting a decoy bag through the water nothing sound as cool as the ripping of pinions in the air.

The green headed Casanova and are not done yet. We will hopefully be heading back out with a gaggle of young guns in tow.

All our best from the Big Mitten

I got buzzed by a few snipe tonight as well, but took no shots. I'll keep an eye out for next years traveler, where it may be able to get to ride in the Saginaw Bay. Hopefully you've got better luck tomorrow. With the strong North winds today I would imagine more birds are on their way down.

Sure did enjoy reading about that hunt. I could visualize your mad escape to the cornucopia of snipe hunting. By the way, those are some dandy looking decoys.

check the id book, I think that is the last living eskimo curlew. Better take the pic down just in case.

Nice post, good to see the bird getting some use.

Hi, It is interesting hearing the stories and travels of this decoy. I just wish I could tag along on his hunts.
Thanks Pete

Brian,
Very cool. I love hunting Snipe. We do it at Harsens, Indiana and lots down in Texas.
Now.......this may sound dumb, but (I know, I've been there before), you can call snipe right back to you, even after you've shot at them. I've done it bunches of times.

First found this out when hunting with my son, Brian and a buddy, Jeff Hartley. We were in area 79 at Harsens and a snipe buzzed us. All three of us shot at it and all of us missed. I started whistling at it (short whistles with a cadence to them) and it came around again, right in front of us....we all emptied our guns a second time on it and ...........missed........doh. I continued whistling and it came around for a third time and...we all missed again so...I let it live. ;0

Many time since then I've used the calling on snipe and it's been highly effective....dumb, but effective.

Weather is shaping up nicely in Maine for Donnie's next stop. Saw my first ice on a duck pond on Wednesday morning, a big storm is pounding us last night and today with a ton of rain, and over the weekend it's supposed to get cold. By the time he shows up conditions should be good, and I already have a decent coastal tide and a decent inland time slot blocked out. We ought to be able to get him 3 hunts.
