LL Bean waterfowl sweater

Does anyone here have one of these sweaters? I'm pondering getting one but was first curious to hear from folks who wear them. I'm looking at the windproof version. This is a lot of money to spend on a sweater. It's almost as much as I paid for my parka 7 years ago so I want to get some opinions before I buy.

I have one of their waterfowler sweaters and I would buy it again. I like wool. I bought an xxl so I could layer it over a fleece pullover top.
I prefer to layer up. Sometimes I put a waterproof camo zip up windbreaker on as the top layer over the sweater.
By the way, I had the same sweater with the windstopper lining and I didn't like it...the lining would bunch up so I sent it back to exchange for a sweater without the lining.
I don't like the heavy traditional waterfowl hunting jackets, they are just too bulky for me.
I live in eastern SD and sometimes it gets miserably cold. The sweater, duofold underwear, fleece pullover and my neoprene waders keeps me plenty warm

Cant speak for the LL Bean sweater but Beretta makes one that I got as a gift last year.
Awesome.. Cant say enough good about it. Warm. Windproof. Zipper makes it easy to vent
when it gets too hot, nice around the neck in the COLD.

As an aside I HATE sweaters, but would fight anyone who told me I had to give up
this one. GREAT STUFF!

I have a beretta with the wind blocker lining similar to the bean model. I love and use it all the time, nice thing about the bean model is they stand behind there products so if you wear it out or don't like it bean will refund your money or send you a new item. I also have a filson waterfowler sweater it's a pretty heavy duty garment. It works great by it self with chest waders I find it a lttle to bulky to wear under a jacket. I am told by my girl friend it is stinky

I have the Filson waterfowl sweater, and can't live without it. I wear it every time I'm out.

They're expensive, but will last a lifetime and you can't beat them for warmth.

I'm sure the LL one is of similar quality though.

Mike,

I would suggest the Cabelas Classic Ragg Wool sweaters that run around $30...I have two of them, both in Tobacco color...Of the two one is running on around 5 years of heavy use and is still in top condition...One is always folded in a dry bag under the bow just in case...The sweaters are only 80% wool but they exceptionally warm for the price...I hunt most of the season without my jacket on just wear the sweater with the a layer of cabelas silk, wool light or mid weight thermals, my favorite hunting polo with the the sweater over top...There has been only a few cases over this season where I have had to wear my jacket which was during early season when we got drizzle and here recently in the past two weeks when the weather had dipped down to 20 degrees and below...If you will wait till the spring months the sweaters are typically on clearance for around $20...

5 minutes in a hunt on December 6th this year, I tripped on a no-see-um in about 2 feet of water...Both arms went in with my gun to catch myself...The wind was blowing pretty heavily and the temperatures was in the mid to low 30s...I stripped all my top layers off and rung as much water as I could...Put it all back on with the second sweater on top and hunted the rest of the afternoon...A little cool at first but after about 10 minutes I warmed up to well within a temperature I was comfortable with...Probably not the smartest thing to do but I was also only 2 minutes from the ramp with three other guys hunting that day...

If you have some cash to spend I do recommend the windshear...The only negative side is that the system does exactly what it supposed to do...It keeps the wind out which doesn't help regulate your body temperature as well as standard sweater...On some days when you are active even it colder weather you sweat way too much...Sweat is the ultimate cause I getting cold...If you are not too active they are great...My stepfather swears by his...But he also takes a four wheeler out the heated concrete blind and climbs in, shortly taking it off and setting it on the back of the chair because the heater base board heater is too warm...He doesn't do much free lance hunting anymore...

Regards,

Kristan

same here....the filson sweaters are hard to beat

I have one that I wear under my 3 in 1 shell. Seems to work pretty good, no complaints. I'm lucky the wife works for beans so get a great discount on everything they sell.

Mike, I do not have one of their sweaters but have been buying LLBean clothing for a few years now. Their clothes wear like iron, you certainly get what you pay for. I have been eying one of those sweaters for about a year now. You can't go wrong with Bean or Filson.................Kevin

You might also consider the McCalister. I have had a Filson , that I outgrew, and now have a Mac. I think that the Filson was warmer, (my wife still has the Filson, and loves it ). The Mac has the waxed cotton fabric all the way down the sleeves, which I like better, instead of just the shoulders like the Filson.

Lots of good choices I guess.
