Looking for new hip boots

The old Hodgeman's have got to go. Sometimes waders are just to much. I'm leaning towards a pair of neoprene hip boots Anyone using them? What manufacture do you like.

Thanks,

Ed L.

Ed,
In a former life I did a little coon hunting with my brother-in-law. Those guys had hip boots with brush leggings made on them. They would go thru some nasty stuff and not get a rip at all! I have tried to find them on the net to no avail. I would think that Wick or one of the other coon hunting clothing manufactures would have them, but can't find them. Maybe someone on here knows what I am talking about and can help. Shawn

I have a pair of Cabelas "Brushtuff"??or Brushbreakers??? anyway...they have about 5 years on them and they are like new. They have the heavy denier Cordura on them and I don't think anything can puncture them..except the boot and that hasn't happened yet. They are stiff and I walk funny (funnier) in them but I couldn't imagine neoprene ones. The ones I have are easy to get into and out of. Had them on yesterday while I was in dhorts and had the wife and grandson laughing at me since they were up under the shorts..probably hunt that way next weekend for early goose in 80 frickin degree weather...how far do you lead a jetski?

Ed:
I'm a long time user of the LaCrosse boots and not because I was born and raised in LaCrosse but the good beating they can take.

I'm leaning towards these. I'm hoping the "Stout" means I won't need a shoe horn to get them on. I couldn't find any hip boots with a cordura covering.

Lee,

I've tried hip boots over the shorts but here on the islands this time of year the itch weed is taller than I am. You get a boot full of that crap and you'll know it. It sounds strange but this time of year when it's 90+ I'll wear this pair of camo PJ's my wife got me one year. Very light material but it covers the skin. Once you go walking around the islands for a while and your wring and wet and you roll you boots down that first instance of getting the boat up on plane will flat out freeze your butt off.

Not sure what I'll do this weekend. Had my eyes on a couple of groups of geese but they've disappeared with all the high water. May have to go dove hunting.

This what the nieghbors are doing during the high water. How far do lead one of these?

If you want a tough pair of boots visit your fire department and find out where they get theirs. I had a pair of what they call deck boots on a ship. These boots lasted twenty five years though all kinds of rough use. From the knee down they had a felt liner. That was good in cold weather as long as you didn't get water over the top. The felt took for ever to dry.

Ed,
Why don't you consider Waist-Hi breathable waders? They aren't as durable as cordura hip boots, but you can wear shorts under them on hot days without worrying about the itch weed, and you can sit down in wet grass or mud. You also don't have to worry about stepping 1" over the top of your boots, which I do EVERY time I wear hip boots.

Rick,

I looked at a pair like that at Gander Mountain last year. They were neoprene and I didn't like the fit. I may have to go up to Cabela's and take a look at these. Should I bring your motor up now or can I use it for a while...LOL

I perused the hip boots from you link and didn't see the ones I have. I dislike neoprene anymore since I got a pair of the Cabelas chest waders with the silver lining stuff. I haven't been cold since I owned them and have used them from 80 degrees to 10degrees. I had the big thick neoprenes that Sutton told me to buy and the tape came off and I broke a nasty sweat just putting them on...my torso was always soaked after the hunt too. They were warm as hell even when standing in ice covered water for 6 hours though...until I found a leak in the crotch..why do they always leak there first? Seems they would leak where the boot attaches first so you didn't come down with a nasty case of roughsac.

you might want to check the hippers from the Muck Boot Company. I have not worn them, but have seen them a few times and they look to be fairly durable while also being relatively light weight.

Ed,I bought the ones that Rick sent the Cabelas, waist high, breathable.Only tried them on and the waist is up about 4" over my waist.
I guess if you wear a 13 shoe you should have a 36" inseam. Geeezzz! They'll work out ok with the side clip suspenders I got from Duluth Trading.
They are easy on and off,and confortable.

Rick and Joe O.

After thinking about how many times I went one step farther and 3 inches deeper in the muck or leaned just a litte to far for theat decoy and sat cold and wet the rest of the morning I decided to take your advise. Ordered them this morning. Thanks,

Ed L.

Ed,
Keep your receipt in a safe place. Cabelas has a first-rate return policy, so if you end up with a leaky seam, even after lots of use, they'll replace em.
Rick

Rick,

Will do. You know though with all the stuff I've order though the years I've been fortunate in the fact I've never had to return anything.
