Looking for New Labrador Retriever

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I can get a Labrador with good field genetics in the greater New England Area. If you know any specific breeders with litters available around Christmas - January that would be great. Thank you for any info you can provide!

MY DOG CAME FROM WINDCREEK KENNELS IN OHIO. OBVIOUSLY NOT IN NEW ENGLAND BUT THEY WILL SHIP TO YOU. EXCELLENT BLOOD LINES. I LIVE IN NEW JERSEY AND MADE THE NINE HOUR TRIP. IT WAS WORTH IT IN MY OPINION. windcreekkennels.com GOOD LUCK WITH THE SEARCH.

IF De/Md is not too far for you travel for nice looking, hard hunting chocolate labs, I know of two litters being ready near Christmas, Let me know and I will get the contact information to ya!

Thanks - I'll take a look at the wind creek kennel web site. Delaware/Maryland is not to far for me to travel but I am looking for a Black Lab. Anyone else that has any info it would be appreciated.

Enright,

A labrador is a labrador, regardless of coat color. Coloration is just a genetic trait...

I wouldn't limit your search because someone breeds "chocolates" - the potential genetic combinations of parentsl that produce "only" chocolates is fairly small in number.

I'd focus on finding a breeder that breeds the kind of traits you want (a hunting dog, good lines, clear eyes, and hips) and once you find them, it is highly likely that they will have black labs. After all, black is the most likely result of most breeding combinations (genetically speaking).

Charlie,
I guess I did not think of the fact that it is likely the litter would produce other colors. I do have my personal preference though and I want a black dog. I am also looking for a breeder that does not 'dabble' in the business. I want a well bred pup from proven lines and am will to pay for such.
Thanks for the lesson on genetics - It will help me broaden my search.

We're doing a breeding right now of 2 terrific animals. Juice x Shade. Juice is a 68 pound mass of muscle, never been sick a day in his life, incredible durable & stamina for days. Very talented and stylish, but his personailty makes you love him even more than his talent. Juice is 3 years old, HRCH (hunting retreiver champion) and is a grand cailber dog (I sat this fall's grand out of we'd both be there right now instead of him dating). Da Juice is out of FC AFC Hi Tech Ceo (one of the top producers of derby dogs on the list the last few years, and a national quailifer year after year, out of NFC AFC CNFC CNAFC Lean Mac & FC AFC Tiger Mcbunn)x an HRCH Bitch out of an FC out of NFC Lottie. . Shade is a 4.5 year old HRCH dog, out of HRCH Croppers Rice Paddy Dadddy #6 on UKC all time producing stud list & HRCH Allie (was on top 10 ukc producing list at one time, after 2 litters). Shades littermates from the first litter number 7 hrch dogs including my rowdy dogg UH HRCH Onlines Cheap Thrills, youngest 500 point male in hrch history (33 months and 1 week), hr title at 14 months, UH title at 14 months (13 consective upland passes) and HRCH title at 22 months, currently 1305 ukc points and a grand pass and a streak of 50 finished passes in a row), amature trained and handled only dropped 5 finished tests in his life, UH HRCH Jumper (shr title at 5 months old, HR title at 8 months, and HRCH at under a year) 500 point dog, HRCH Lacey MH 500 point dog (amature trained and handled), & several others. Shades littermates include 5 HRCH dogs, one of them being GRHRCH Coal MH 500 point dog. Coffee is out of a GRHRCH out of NFC Cropper, and HRCH Allie whose out of FC AFC Chavez (FC at 2 years old, national finisher, first lean mac son to really produce, still finished field trials at 11 years old, and #9 on ukcs current stud producer list even though he hasn't been bred much for a long time) x MH damn. Lean mac on both sides of pedigrees, and proven performance throughout. The ideal of this breeding was for personailty, talent, stamina, looks, and health. Talented dogs that normal people can train, hunt, and test with. Breeding is happening this week, so it'd be close to Christmas before they'd be ready to go. Oxford Ms/ Memphis Tn area.
Oh, and even though Shade carries yellow, and Juice choclate, pups should be all black. travis

Charlie - I sent Travis a pm and hopefully we can work something out - he is an awfully long ways from CT though. Thanks for the help

The cost that this dog will incur over it's lifetime will pale in comparison to the investment in a round trip to see Travis (or another reputable breeder).

Consider that this dog will likely be a part of your life for something like 15 years. Heck, you'll pay more for dog food over than the money than you will spend in gas.

Also, consider that if you buy a dog with bad hips, bad eyes, bad joints, or bad temprament you have wasted all of the time invested (opportunity cost) and the capital investment (breeder fee for the dog) and your sunk costs (papers, shots, etc).

In my opinion, you are much better traveling to a reputable breeder and getting a good dog - it limits your risk and is likely to reduce your average costs over the lifetime of ownership.

Plus you'll probably get a good dog.... :)

Shipping is no big deal. But then again, it will be duck season when they get ready to come home... I live in memphis, hunt an hour west of here in arkansas and the puppies would be an hour south of here in mississppi, if the weather co-ops the trip to get a puppy might be an added bonus. Waiting for confirmation of a tie, if we don't get a defintive tie this afternoon, they're going to the vet in the am. Probably be priced in the 600 range, well bred hunt test puppies are the best bargin there is in the dog world. travis

Ok -you guys are definately making me think. If your telling me I should hunt if I were to make the trip to get the pup I can say hunting out that way is one of those things I've always wanted to do - but work, kids, and the busy pace I keep has prevented me from doing it.
As I am figuring it - If those dogs tie tommorrow - a 63 day gestation period - and then 8 weeks after birth puts us at the end of January - Is that still duck season down your way cause up here in the north things are pretty much locked up (ice) and the season is over?

we run to the last sunday in janurary. Often times we dont get good till first week in janurary. Thats the old 2 birds with one stone addage. travis

Travis, though I would have loved to kill two birds with ya, it seems I have found a fine dog somewhat closer to home. It is still 10 hrs away but it is not anywhere near as far as memphis. I have a deposit in and as long as 9 dogs are born I should be OK - (8 deposits ahead of mine). We'll see what happens and I'll keep ya posted. thanks

Good for you bro. I was going to have to tell you this morning that it didn't take. took shade to vet friday and shes not in heat, despite the swelling and bleeding. Apprently some kind of false heat, which happens sometimes to real althletic bitches. Best of luck for you and your new puppy, check for a local hunting retreiver club in your area (www.hrc-ukc.com) and see if you can get with them. Amazing how much fun you can have with your dog. travis

Looks like Windcreek does'nt have any litters upcomming at the moment, sorry for the bad info. My dog's sire (Bootscootin' Cuda, offspring of Barracua Blue, the most decorated chocolate ever) came from Marshmutt's Kennels in Indiana. Good luck
