Looking to hunt Oswego NY, anyone in the area?

Looking for a place to hunt near Oswego, NY. I will be taking my daughter up to SUNY Oswego Nov 19th and 20th to check out the campus and meet with the coaches.
I am thinking about bringing some gear to get in a hunt on Saturday morning while she works out with the team.
Ducks or deer, does not make a differance to me. I would rather not have to trailer the boat so please keep that in mind. I can bring my trusty retriever, Moch if needed.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
I would also be willing to trade a hunt or fishing trip with you if you want to come down to Long Island.

Thanks in advance

John,
It's a pretty nice campus--lots of building there since i was an undergrad--1960-64--After mfa, i did a few years in the art dept, also---waterfowling is probably better up toward mexico, which is ne on 104--best choice is to google waterfowl guide services , oswego area--you might hit on one or two.
Eons ago, before mobving to delaware, we hunted coneys, squirrel and pheasant up there--a holdover from my time in carbondale illinois--No fowling until i hit the delmarva peninsula.
She will like the place--good staff, campus---only bad part is the #$^$#^#% winter up there--Tell her to expect snow, and lots of it!!

Stands are closed for the year, but there are some pretty good places along the lake, just west of town that made the BEST texas hots on the planet!!!
O used to have a studio on west first st--right down by the river---occasionally, would take trips to the river late at night for smelt---amazing that the town cops always knew when smelt was cooking in the studio!!
Enjoy!!!

John,
I may be able to get out after some divers that Saturday. I'll shoot you a PM after I check with my wife.

Thanks for the offer. Let me know if it will work for you. I'm still not sure how much time I will have. We are waiting to hear back from the coach. That will determine what I can do.
I have to drop her of on campus at 12 noon on Friday and then pick her up some time Saturday late morning or early afternoon, still don't know.
I may just bring my rifle and go for a hike and see if I can find a nice buck to fill the freezer.

John... thats near my old college stomping grounds. I have hunted and fished all over upstate NY from the Catskills, to the Finger Lakes to the Syracuse region.
Call the DEC region 7 office
615 Erie Blvd. West
Syracuse, NY 13204
315-426-7400.
They will send you a book of maps of all state land in that area, there is no lack of woods up that way for you to hunt in. It may be a 30 min drive from Oswego, but there are thousands of acres up there. I used to hunt Three Rivers and Happy Valley WMA's, mostly upland bird hunting... but there is plenty of deer, just wear a lot of orange as the locals do hit the state land pretty hard, especially on weekends.

You can find info here regarding locations & maps: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8279.html

There is also Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge within an hour which in itself is worth the time to just drive through. Tons of birds there! You can hunt the refuge, but you have to jump through tons of hoops first... bird ID course, no more than 25 shells, etc.

If I had to hunt one place, I would reccomend the Northern Montezuma Wildlife Area (25 miles west of Syracuse). This is a 3100 acre island (Howland Island) which I believe is walk in access only, some guys even take a mountain bike from what I have heard. Great duck hunting with tons of deer & turkey on the island from what I have heard. Do a google search for "Howland Island WMA", I have wanted to hunt here for years as I have heard it's pretty decent.

Good luck and let me know how you make out...

Chris

By the way... the steelhead fishing in the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY is pretty good that time of year. You could do a guided wading or driftboat trip for a half day, there are tons of guides. Just google "Pulaski, NY Fishing Guides" and a ton will come up, stay away from the Yankee Fly Shop though, I have heard terrible things.... I reccomend Whitakers Fly Shop, www.whitakers.com

Thanks Chris

My time will be very limited. I only have Friday afternoon and maybe Saturday morning.
