Lowe boats

Thinking of purchasing a 16' Lowe aluminum bass boat to convert for sea ducks.

Anyone with knowledge or experience regarding Lowe ?

Thanks
Bill

I had an 18ft Lowe and currently have a 16ft Lowe and I love them both. They are tough as hell and ride nice. Both mine were/are regular jon boats though not V's.

I had a 16' Lowe bass boat years ago. It was a nice well built boat. Used it on the Alabama River lakes for bass & crappie fishing & served me well.
That said, if the one you are looking at is the same style of mod-v bass boat hull, it's definately not an open-ocean hull and I don't think it would be well suited for seaducking. I think there are other hulls that would serve you better.

Bill,

I have to agree with Carl. I have a 1440 mod v Lowe and love the boat hunting protected waters or close to shore. But I'll take my 17' Deep V Starcraft if I'm in big water.

Take care,

Ed L.

Thanks for the input guys.

Carl, the guy tells me it is a pro V. I'm not looking for open ocean but rather in harbors and bays.

Just check Lowe's web site and based on that I would say it is a deep v

I pulled my old lowe roughneck into a highway ditch at 60 mph and totaled the truck and trailer. The boat had one small patch and is still in service today.

They're tough as can be.

Don't be over confident in the deep V and make sure you don't under power it.

I'd guess at least a 50. But haven't run an aluminum V over a 12 footer.

I had a 50 on my 1752 MV and it was enough power. In your case a V will have more drag in the water and in most hunting situations you can easily overload a boat, even if by accident. Throw big water in the mix and you're in trouble.

Also take into consideration the floor, carpet, etc that adds weight to the hull. Weight is a good thing, but too much makes things get bad in a hurry.

The one I'm looking at has a Johnson 60/2 stroke.

Looked at it tonight and your right the floor, compartments etc. contribute weight. I think it may be a
good boat to set up for sea ducks - no big water though - staying in bays and harbors I think.

Boat looks like a tank.

I'd have to agree with Dave. A 50 is a nice size. If you are buying new, I'd upgrade to the max horsepower on the CG plate. The marginal increase in price for bumping up the horsepower is usually relatively small on a boat package. I was pricing alaskans this winter and the difference between a 60 and a 90 was $400. That's not a lot extra on top of the price of a new package.

That sounds like a good fit.

I still prefer 2 strokes even if they are a little louder. The torque and lighter weight are worth it the oil mixing and a little smoke now and again.

It's no Alaskan Charlie but I missed out on an Alaskan 18' on Craigslist.
Saw this Lowe with the aforementioned 60.
It is a 91 with power trim, elec start, trolling setup, lowrance, radio on a load rite everything is in nice shape. Mine for $2700
I don't see how I can lose.
Whatdaya think

Sounds like a great deal. Jump on it before someone else does.

Was the one you missed down in MA? There was an 18'er on NH craiglist for $4500 with a 70. A sweet deal for someone. http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/593277431.html

Thats the one - no active post on craigslist so I think it is gone.

I took the Lowe deal and hope for the best.

Thanks guys for your valued input.

Bill,

One of my buddies has a Lowe 1677WT. It's a deepV utility boat. Very nice rig. Lowe doesn't make it anymore but if you can find one used I'd recommend it. It's 16' 5'' in length and has a 77'' beam. It's extremely stable, sea worthy and rides the water better than any other aluminum boat I have ever ridden in. He has a 40 HP 4 stroke mercury on it and it scoots along quite nicely.
