Lucky Dog dummies from Cabela's are crap.

I guess I shouldn't have bought the cheapest ones, but I figured there couldn't be much technology in a dog toy. I was wrong. After about 1 year they are all splitting in the the same spot near the valve. I have an old bumper from my first dog that is almost 20 yrs old, so I know they can make 'em last. But Lucky Dog isn't making them like that.

Mike

PS Anyone got any reccommendations for replacements?

I have been out of the game for about 10 years, so maybe there is someone making better, but I have several dozen Neumann and Bennetts bumpers that I would love to trade for something someone else has. Can anyone use these? What have you got to trade?

Mike,

The last time I bought bumpers I got a bunch from ez rotational. They are a molding company. They have lasted for years. I don't think they sell them in small quantities. This winter I bought a foam duck from Armadillo Foam Co. They sent along a free bumper with the duck. I really like it. I like them better than the Dokken ducks. It will absorb a little water but is easy to wring out. I also know Avery now markets bumpers. I've never held one in my hand but you might try them.

As you have learned stay away from bumpers with a valve. The cheap ones will split there. The others will eventually have the valve pop out and all of my dogs have them squeezed the bumper lika an accordian driving me crazy with the noise!

If you search for Armadillo Foam Co. you should find their website. Their service was great.

For the money, I'd run with the Dokkens. We helped develop them and built the first molds for them as well. We actually were the first ones to bring them to the market for Tom Dokkens. There is a lot of "training" built into the design of the dummies. They help prevent hard-mouth, shaking and grabbing a bird in the wrong places. They can be injected with scent if you'd like and the dogs like em.

Mike,
Google Real Duck training dummies. I have some that are almost 10 years old and still good as new escept showing some discoloration from dirt and grass. they are made of fire hose with compacted cork granules inside. Hand stitched, real tough. Hope that helps some

Thanks for the tips guys. I can't see me buying a bunch of those Dokkens for running pile drills and T's with though. Too pricey for a doz.

I never thought about the valves being the problem on those Lucky Dog ones but that's exactly what it is. I'll have to get some without. I might just get some pieces of plastic pipe for land work in the meantime. I don't think it would make a difference to the dog.

Dave D, I'm always up for a trade if you need any wooden decoys. Let me check out some dummy info online and in the meantime go to www.yukonmike.com to see some of the gunners I make.

Another question for you guys: How often do you think I should be using dead birds with her? Once a week? Every couple of days? She's 1.

Josh, what a terrific idea!

Now I have something to do with the junk I've been pouring into the trash from my vacuum in the carving shed. All I have to do is get some firehose and visit the shoemaker in the mall to get some sewing done. Thanks for the link!

The Neumann and Bennents that are mentioned for trade above are the original that lucky dog copied to be made cheaply in China or someplace. There is no comparison between the two. The Lucky Dog bumpers are made out of very bad plastic and doesn't hold up anything like the N & B.

Neumann and Bennents are the people who made those plastic inflatable decoys in the sixties, I think they might still make those. We had a few dozen sprig back then. The tails were always bent from being stuff in and stored in the decoy bag.

Ill vote heavily on the Real Duck bumpers they are tough and well made. Gordy has been on them since the beginning.
Not a big fan of the dockens anymore Murphy usued to like to bite into them a bit when they would get old.

They make them for all dawgs

lil dawgs

jumpin bunnie lookin dawgs

Dawgs that like 2 at a time

Water dawgs

silly dawgs

thats not a real duck thats his thuckie ball......

Dawgs that look like they been smokin dope

And they fit the mouth better than a cheap Iowa bumper

Good stuff they are, happy Hump day I better quit now.

OK, 2 dozen are boxed up to go to Josh, that leaves me with a couple more dozen in need of homes....

I have 19 White 2x12, 5 Black 2x12 that are Neumann and Bennett's "Original" sell for $5.25 each new

I also have some odds and ends.... 4 Orange, 1 black, 1 white that are hard plastic, and 2 Orange canvas 2x10.

I also have a few of the dummies used with the .22 cal launchers, canvas and hard foam. I have the launcher too if anyone is interested. I have it mounted to a piece of steel and used it remotely via a long line.

What have you got to trade? YukonMike, could not get through to your website?

Thanks Dave!!

+1 on the site Mike

I second (or third) the "wildrose" RealDuck bumpers . They are great, well made and are from nice people too.

Mike, I don't know how everyone else feels but I only use ducks to get the pups birdy when young and then often enough that the dogs remember what they are. I do make exceptions when prepareing for a hunt test season. I then use birds daily a week prior to a test. Just to assure proper handling and delivery at the test.
Good luck John

Mike, If I have them I use them. I try to use them on blinds all the time. If I'm running single marks I'll save them for the last series of the day. If I'm doing multiple marks I like to use them for the memory bird. Keep the bumpers in the same bag as the duck so they get some sent on them if your going to be training several times a week, if not just throw it back in the freezer.
