Anyone running a Lund Alaskan? I was wonder how seaworthy these boarts are. They look stout. I am looking at one for a big water duck boat. Any issues to look for when checking out an aluminimum boat? The boat I al looking at is a 1996 and appears in good condition. Do you run a kicker on your boat?
 
I have the 20-ft that has spent a bunch of time on Long Island Sound and a bit off the Cape (Cod) She's wet! But very cork like and takes very little green water over the sides cause she lifts so easy. My striper fishing style is drifting bait or jigs so she's bobbed through a lot of rip lines that beat up bigger heavier boats. She's got us home through 3 to 6 (NOAA Called not my eye) off the cape. 2-ftrs keep me off full throttle unless they are well spaced. Glass deep Vs blow by me all the time and much better for big water fishing but at 2X or more the weight of the Lund. I do have a 9.9 kicker on her after the Cam Shaft broke on the 70 - Rude. We were against the NY side of the Sound, 14 miles out of port. I can live with 6 mph (sailboat speed) to get home. It's also nice to run the kicker in tight to rocky shores. Smaller wheel and skeg envelop plus I can haul the 9.9 off for repairs while the 70 4-stroke weighs over 300#.

I bought mine after hunting with Bill Wasson a few times. He ran a 20-ft out of Rockport, ME, I was impressed with weight vs sea worthiness. You must always remember she's an open hull and any water coming in heads immediately to the bilge. Open hulls are significantly less safe than self bailers.

Frank we've been running alaskans and SSVs since the early 80s. I have had an Alaskan just like the one you're looking at, I currently own a '99 18 and there are another two 18s and two 20s in the family fleet. In other words, we pretty much like our Alaskans for our range of applications. They all have their advantages and tradeoffs.

Scott, you mention the lund is wet. I hear that all the time. Both bro in law's have lunds, 1 an AK version, both seem to throw a lot of spray which is blown back if you are into the wind or with much speed. Is that your experience too? you mention no green water so I suspect you don't mean stuffing the bow. (never had that happen to us either)

I too keep my eye out for a 20' lund AK, but I wonder if there is a better boat....thoughts?

Matt, that last picture you posted of the kid (yours I assume??) with the duck call is one of the best I have seen. Nice!!! I love the 3 boat pic too.
 
For anyone looking for one, there is a super clean 20 foot tiller model for sale in grand rapids, mi on craigslist. It has an Etec 75 on it. $9,500 is a smokin deal!
