I talk about these kids all the time. Since we have no family close by these kids and our kids have grown up together like cousins. Anyways, this is the youngest Deuling, Derek (12) with his first big game animal ever. He's been in on lots of hunts in his life including that monster elk that Al Klassen shot up here a few years ago, but this is the first year he can shoot. Him and his dad flew in to a tough spot and spent a few days looking for this guy. Its 42 on the long side, 39 1/2, 13 1/2 bases.

It was a perfect set up for a kid once they managed to get up close to the rams as they bedded. Derek said he had the bipod set up waited for the ram to stand for 45 minutes. His dad was coaching him and glassing the group the whole time. When the ram finally did stand, Derek was on him in 1/2 a second and that was that. Last week he was having a hard time hitting the paper at 100yds at the range, but I guess he got his flinch under control for that shot.
It took them two more days to shuttle the meat, horns and hide down to the lake and then got a plane out. Great hunt.
I posted this picture before. This is Derek's older brother who is Mac's best friend, with a book sheep he got in October a couple of years ago. This one scored 171 officially. I did Derek's ram yesterday for him, and it will shrink some, but right now it is 166. Book is 170 on Dall sheep.

Just for comparison, here's the sheep that was taken by the hunter who bought the special auction tag for this year. It will make book after it dries I think. I was talking to a girl yesterday who's dad was the outfitter for that hunt and she said she spent two months this summer living in the hills and looking for that ram for her dad. She figured she spotted over 350 rams to find this one.
