Hi everyone,

I've been going out the past few days trying to fill a deer tag with my muzzle loader or hand gun. Haven't seen squat till this morning when two does came thru the timber about 85 yards away. They were not running but moving quickly along, stopping for a pause every few steps. Just had time to grab my gun and put the cross hairs on her rib cage.

When the smoke cleared they were both running off but one was definitely hurting. It felt like a good shot but when your face is covered with black powder smoke, it is hard to know for sure. Didn't take long for her to stumble twice and go down, she barely made 40 yards from when she was hit.

Thanks to self timers and a handy log, I was able to get this picture as well.

When I rolled her over and field dressed her, I was able to check for bullet placement. Nice entry wound exactly where I had aimed, passing thru both lungs and an exit hole under the front leg on the opposite side. I just love it when a plan comes together. Yippee!

This last picture is for Dave Parks. You see Dave, this is the poor man's ATV.

The ground was just muddy enough that by the time I got back to my truck, it was time to clean the tires.

Fresh deer liver on the menu for tonight's supper at the McCann household. Any one wanting to show up is invited. I love liver but my wife is less enthusiastic about it.

That looks like a nice plump doe and should eat well. Don't fergit to have the squaw make ya some new moc's out of the hide. :^)

Don't recognize you with the regular hair do.
I like the cart a lot. Nice doe and good work on the shot dave.

Dave,

Nice way to finish off the hunting season. Looks to be a good eatin one too.

Nice work...I have a taste for some fresh backstrap too! Have a week to fill that last archery tag. Better get to it but I can't stop killin' geese!

You old mountain men don't need those new fangled carts. A stick and wraps of string and over the shoulder. Wauaa. Watch out for skins and pilgrums and you'll keep your hair all the way back to the truck. Nice you made meat.

Dave,You probably already know my stand on the perfect deer but I had to chime in. Love those ol' smoke poles but what was that about"cross hairs"? hahahahah yuk yuk. Picked up a Cabellas New Army a few days back and am chomping at the bit to get it dirty. Probably do that the same day I pattern some new Bismuth reloads made for Dad's '97 that I hope to hunt a bit with next year. 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz # 4 bismuth. Should br fun. Congrats again on the meat makin.

Them "cross hairs" would be the ones found inside that round tube thingy sitting on top of the barrel. I know many states don't allow those for muzzle loader season but I'm sure glad it's still ok in Iowa. Lot's easier on my tired old eyes. I use almost the same thing on my 44cal. handgun. Both scopes are real low power but they sure do give one a clear site picture.

The other thing that works well for me is a "red dot type scope" (not a lazer). I got one of those on my Ruger single six 22cal. Went out this morning with my 22 handgun and collected 4 squirrels in 2 1/2 hours. One gray and the rest fox squirrels.

I too have a black powder revolver. My wife Linda gave it to me as a Christmas present many years ago. Haven't fired it for several years. I hunted squirrels with it a couple times but never managed to hit one with it. Have fun with yours.

Dave,
Boy are you preaching to the choir about old eyes!!! I was born with old eyes and the years have not been kind. I am so glad that the scopes are getting better and better. I have a red dot sight on a turkey gun too. Just got another new toy after Christmas and it is going to get a QD scope, a Remington 7615. Been waiting for years for someone to come out with one of those. Rem first 760 was in .222 so it is kind of a retro thing.

Dave,

I also harvested some meat with the old smokepole down in your neck of the woods. It's no monster, but my best buck to date.
